Last year at this time we were all talking about DC’s New52. This time all the rage is with Marvel and their “reboot” effort Marvel NOW! On today’s show I go over the titles that we know of so far and speculate just how Marvel may collect the monthly issues in either trade paperback or hardcover format. And just where does Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher fit into all of this?
I also go over the demise of the Marvel Premiere Classic Hardcover line. I can tell you that I’m very disappointed, but I understand business is business and if you take a look at the sales figures for these books, you can understand why Marvel is doing this. I hope that part of the program will continue on in their trade paperback Classic series. Some titles do very well in that format. For example, Deadpool Volume 7 is being released this week!
Marvel has released a new trailer for the Avengers Vs X-Men HC. It’s due out November 7, 2012 and will include the following comic books: Avengers Vs. X-Men #0-12, AVX: Vs. #1-6, Avengers Vs. X-Men Infinite #1, #6 and #9, and material from Point One. In the original solicit stated that it would be 528 pages, but today that changed to 568 Pages. The price remains the same at $75.00 US.

Well here we have it – another season starts today. No, I’m not talking about baseball, I’m talking about the Big Summer Comic Book Event. Marvel kicks it off first with the A vs. X aka Avengers Vs. X-Men. Not since Civil War have I seen so much hype with a Marvel event. As any comic book guy knows, both teams have battled each other several times over the years. And if you’re looking for a some nostalgia, I recommend The X-Men vs. The Avengers from 1987. This 4-issue mini, yes, it only took 4 issue back then, is a fun romp between to all-star teams. Magneto is the focal point here and no matter how bad he gets, he’s a mutant and mutants stick with their own. Sounds a bit like Hope (and Phoenix) in A vs X. Here is the official description:
When Magneto’s on trial, he needs all the help he can get; he finds it in the remnants of his former fortress, Asteroid M! The X-Men aren’t sure what his scheme is, but they’re positive they don’t want the Avengers and the Soviet Super-Soldiers to find out first! Multi-team warfare with the eyes of the world on all three! Also featuring the X-Men’s fabulous first fight with the Avengers, to keep them from unleashing the legendary Lucifer!
Marvel released a Premiere Classic Hardcover of this series on January 6, 2010 and not only did it collect the mini but also X-Men #9, “Enter, The Avengers!” (January 1965) which is the first time the two teams meet each other. The villian Lucifer also appears here. And for you continuity buffs the X-Men Vs. Avengers series takes place around the time of Avengers #290 and Uncanny X-Men #212. Pick this book up for only $19.99 and enjoy the season – both past and present!
Looking back this was a week to remember in the world of comics. We lost the great Joe Simon, a man that everyone who has read, whether they know it or not. We also lost Ed Barreto, at a young age of 57 and last week Jerry Robinson died. A somber week, indeed.
Comics must go on though and when it comes to DC Comics, there is no sign of stopping. Two major announcements this week with Absolute Batman and Robin by Grant Morrison and Absolute Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War. The latter of which I have a few issues with – or should I say, the lack of issues!
I also talk more recent comic books with X-Men. That’s right, I read X-Men for the first time in several years. I get down to business with the Schism hardcover and just where Wolverine, Cyclops and the rest of the mutants may be heading with Regenesis, X-Sanction and Avengers Vs X-Men.
All this and Bob and Doug McKenzie.
Merry Christmas, hoser.
The second full day at Comic Con 2011 comes to a close. This year, more then others, I wish I was there. Let’s recap on a few reprint items:
Expect a X-Men #1 The 20th Anniversary Edition in October. It’s a special project by Senior Editor Jeff Youngquist of Marvel’s Collected Editions department and the entire book, all 5 covers and all, will be recolored.
The folks at IDW know how to time things. Each day we get another gem and today’s happens to be Will Eisner’s The Spirit Artist’s Edition, 144 pages, $100, 2012. This is going to go so well with my complete run of Spirit Archives. – Thanks to Rich, Bleeding Cool
Tails, the original webcomic by Comeback Kings artist Ethan Young, is finding print life at Hermes Press as a graphic novel in early 2012. – Thanks to Chris, Hermes Press Blog
