This is it! My Big Year in Review Show! Not only do I go over my Top 10 Collected Editions of 2010 (which I already blogged about), but I also do a month by month look – and critique – of many news and noteworthy books that caught my eye from all the major companies this past year.

Warning: I say it every year; this particular podcast should be taken in moderation because this is not your typical CCL Podcast. What this basically is, is one big list, so I suggest you listen while shoveling snow, mowing your lawn, going on a long commute, etc. It’s perfectly alright to keep this as a reference tool.

I have also supplied a much more expanded collected editions release list for 2010 and a time listing of all the different months.

CCL Podcast #276 – Wednesday Comics HC

Once in a great while something new, something innovative, and something captivating comes along. But of course we all know that there are no new ideas anymore and the things of old just get reimagined and repackaged for a new generation. I’m talking about Wednesday Comics; last summer’s weekly newspaper phenomenon that updated the full page and full color weekly Sunday comics of the 1930 and 40′s. DC Comics rounded up arguably the best talent the could find and put them on their premiere properties like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and others, publishing 15 different one page stories that ran for 12 weeks straight.

I enjoyed the first four issues very much but I stopped buying them because I thought the format was a bit cumbersome and decided to wait for the collected edition to read the entire storylines in one sitting. I think my patience paid off because I believe this is one of the best books to come out this year. Not only is there a multitude of talent and just about every DC character is represented, but we get to see our heroes in a new light and we are not tied to any continuity or pervious incarnation. If all you know about Batman is from Adam West that’s OK, it works. And if you have no idea who Kamadi or Metamorpho is that’s OK, too. After you have read the first page you are instantly transported to their world and are rooting for the good guys to get justice.

There are a few pages of sketches and creator biographies to satisfy your need for DVD extras. But the real Easter Eggs are the full color single pages of The Creeper (written by Keith Giffen with art by Eric Canete) and Plastic Man (written by Evan Dorkin with art by Stephen DeStefano. I can only wonder if the full stories are sitting on Dan Didio’s desk just waiting to get approval for a Wednesday Comics Volume 2.

I go over this book in full and also talk about Steve Canyon, which will now get republished by Hermes Press (previously by Checker Book) and the New Releases of the Week.

CCL Podcast #273 – Same Day Print and Digital; Foursquare And Your LCS

My thanks to everyone who sent in an email or posted a comment for last week’s show. I really appreciate it. Things are getting back to normal and the boy in question is suspended from school pending further charges and an expected expulsion. I quickly talk about talk it on today’s episode.

Besides that there is a lot of other things I need to go over including the direction of this podcast for the summertime and the possibility of a video cast – I’m serious this time! Digital Comics are always on my mind, as evident of my DGTL Comics site, (and more often used Twitter feed) and today I touch on IDW and Marvel releasing the same comic book in print and digital form on the same day. I also have brilliant and untapped solution to drum up more business for the Local Comic Book Shop by using Foursquare more effectively. It’s up to them if they want to use it as a marketing strategy.

All this including email on the subjects of Dark Shadows and The Phantom and the New Releases of the Week.

How DC Should (and Will) Collect Wednesday Comics

    July 9, 2009
    By

There’s been a lot of talk on Blogs, Twitter and many message boards, on just how DC Comics will collect Wednesday Comics. Keep in mind that at its core, Wednesday Comics are newspapers and measure 14 x 20 and are 16 pages long. 12 weeks from now, when it’s all said and done, there will be 192 total pages with a retail cost of $48.00.

Myself, and many others, think that DC should try as best as they can to keep the oversized format and do it in the same manner that Sunday Press Books has done with Little Nemo In Slumberland: So Many Splendid Sunday’s or Sundays with Walt & Skeezix. Those books top out at 21 x 16.6. It’s plenty of room to keep the exact same size that DC Comics has going right now. Keep in mind that Little Nemo retails for $120 and is 128 pages while Walt & Skeezix retails for $90 and has 96 pages.

If DC does go with the Little Nemo format, they should offer Wednesday Comics as a 2-Volume (Absolute) Hardcover set with approximately 100 pages each, including introductions, detailed creator credits and a few extras with a price of $150 ($75 per volume).

Let’s wait and see if I’m proven wrong.
