Batwoman, aka Kathy Kane, seems to be the most talked about character in comicdom right now even though she has only appeared in a handful of book books in the past three years. If you don’t know why she is being talked about, it’s because she is a lesbian (I have no issue with that). Anyway, it’s all about to change when Detective Comics #854 comes out in April. That’s when she will take over as the main protagonist in the Batman flagship title. I blogged about her, and other heroines, last August as part of my series The Real Power of the DC Universe inspired by the Adam Hughes poster. In those posts you can find a listing of my recommendations of the best collected editions for each character.
In other news, there are still a few things that have come out of the New York Comic Con – some well known others not so well known. Let’s take a look at them now. Have a great weekend!
- Brian Reaves, Comics in Crisis Blog, asks the question – Are Absolute Editions Really “Absolute”? Maybe. Maybe Not. But one thing is for sure – Brian is correct when he writes that they are for the “serious collector”. However, I don’t know anyone you has paid full price for these books or even the Marvel Omnibus line except if that item is sold out and the only way to obtain the volume is overspending, like I had to do to get my copy of Jack Kirby’s The Eternals Omnibus. That was my own fault, I should have preordered it. Let that be a cautionary tale. Budget well and take a good look at the Previews Catalog, that way you won’t be kicking yourself when you miss out on a book like Absolute Authority or the Alias Omnibus.
- The Collected Editions Blog is looking for guest Bloggers for a stint this summer. If you are interested stop on by their blog and send in an e-mail to sign up. I’m going to do it, please join me!
- Newsarama has a nice article from the NYCC ’09 on the Dark Horse Creepy Archives. One sentence that caught my eye was – Currently there are plans for eleven volumes, but that could go to twenty six if the entire library is collected.
- Newsarama also has an interview with Berkeley Breathed on the upcoming Bloom County collections from IDW. You can bet that at some point I’ll be reviewing these books. There is no mention of an The Academia Waltz collected edition (a prequel of sorts to BC), nor is there word on an Outland or Opus collection, but if the BC books sell reasonably well, then I think it’s a safe bet we will get the sequels.
- Danny Fingeroth, TwoMorrows, is interviewed at the NYCC ’09 by GalleyCat on the subject of Graphic Novels in the Recession (01:11, video). This is personal for me because I’ve interviewed Danny twice for the Tune-In Podcast, but I never knew what he looked like.
- In conjuction with the above point, ICv2.com reports that Graphic Novels Up And Manga Down For 2008.
- Rich Johnston, CBR Columnist – Lying In The Gutters, on how the Absolute Promethea may truly be lying in the gutters.
