OK first things first, I liked the Wolverine movie. It wasn’t great, but it was a lot better then I expected. Some things were silly and unnecessary, like the boxing match, but Liev Schreiber was excellent and it makes me think how bad Tyler Mane was in the first X-Men movie. There’s talk of a sequel (or two more, really) and there’s a rumor of a Gambit movie. If the latter is true, I’d like to see Ryan Reynolds reprise his role as Wade Wilson and without giving a way any spoilers, there is a way they could do it.

As for Free Comics Book Day, I took the kids, up to the LCS and we were able to pick up Blackest Night #0, The DC Kids Mega Sampler and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I also purchased a Marvel Adventures Avengers Digest for Patrick and a Hanna Montana Digest (I’m not kidding) for Erin. A sale was going on in the store and I was able to find a mint condition copy of the 2008 Eisner Award Nominee for Best Anthology Postcards: True Stories That Never Happened, edited by Jason Rodriguez (Villard), for 50% off. I thumbed through it last year, but never bought it. I even thought it should have won, but it lost out to 5, by Gabriel Bá, Becky Cloonan, Fabio Moon, Vasilis Lolos, and Rafael Grampa (self-published). I’ll doing my annul FCBD recap later in the week on the podcast. Now on to some links:

• Later this month the family and I are going to see The Detroit Symphony Orchestra perform Star Trek meets Star Wars. I’m very much looking forward to it.
• Aspiring graphic designers have until June 8 to submit entries to the 2009 Design Scholarship Challenge to compete for the national prize, an opportunity to work with DC Comics on an upcoming marketing campaign for Absolute Justice and a $25,000 tuition scholarship to one of the sponsoring design schools.
• Andrew Wahl, Comics Bronze Age editor, asks What are your favorite Bronze collections? Does Green Lantern/Green Arrow Hard Traveling Heroes count?
• The artwork for this week is a 3D mockup of You Have Killed Me! by Jamie S. Rich and Joelle Jones (Oni Press). Be sure to check out the 36 page preview, too.
• L.E. Becker, owner of WARP 9 in Clawson, Michigan, writes in to share his frustration regarding the ever increasing number of late comic book titles from big name creators. WARP 9 is an excellent store that I have shopped at in the past. It’s not too far away from my house and I should really try to get there more often.
• Fantagraphics reports that a page from Dash Shaw’s story in Mome Vol. 14 was accidentally printed out of sequence. Dash explains on his blog.

Sometimes I can get real ornery, but it takes a lot to get me that way. This week Marvel puts me in a mood. It has to do with their shipping schedule and the changes that have been made. Not only that, but as I run down the New Releases of the Week, some other questions arise from other companies, as to just what the heck is going on with content and price per page.

I calm down later on in the show with Greg Rucka’s early work Whiteout. I cover both Definitive Editions from Oni Press, which were published last summer.

This week has been full of new and useful tools, for both you and I, here at the website and podcast: a new survey (which I encourage you to fill out), updated and new checklists, Comments are now turned On, a new Home button/link (it’s about time, eh?) and last, but not least, the CCL on Twitter. I’m most proud of the last one. I’ve been real hesitant to add a new social networking tool to my repertoire, but I now realize its full capability. Not only do you get to know what I’m having for dinner each night, but you can now get the latest news on collected editions as soon as it happens. So please join up and put me on your cell phone.
