DC COMICS
YOUNG JUSTICE
Any chance of a “Young Justice” trade paperback? Not at this time.
FINAL CRISIS
Can we get annotations in the back of the “Final Crisis” hardcover? “No, that’s Absolute Final Crisis.”
Greg Rucka DETECTIVE COMICS (This means two future Rucka Detective Comics hardcovers/trades?): How long will Rucka be on “Detective Comics?” 12-14 issues guaranteed.
VERTIGO
100 BULLETS:
“We gotta get that last issue before we can” publish hardcovers of 100 Bullets, Berger explained. However, she hopes that they will be released soon.
MADAME XANADU
The upcoming first trade paperback will collect a full ten issues for the standard $9.99 first trade price, Berger said.
PREACHER
The cover of the first Preacher hardcover was shown. The hardcovers will be slightly larger than comics, but not Absolute-sized.
Peter Milligan’s SHADE: THE CHANGING MAN
- Will the rest of the Shade: The Changing Man issues be released in trade paperback? “I’ve been working on that for a long time,” Berger said. “I’m hoping with Pete’s resurgence at Vertigo, we can do it. It’s sort of a group decision at the company, but a lot of fans of the series ask for the series to be collected. We would very much like tod o that.”
VERTIGO CRIME graphic novels
Format:
Each of the books will be black & white, with some grey tones (depending on the artists’ preference; it was left up to the artist, according to Dennis), hardcover, and in a smaller format – comparable to Road to Perdition. The books will average 180 story pages.
Asked about price, Dennis said, “It’s gonna be under $20 for close to 200 story pages, hardcover. We haven’t really figured it out.”
Addressing the format, Vankin said that it’s “just a good format for this type of book,” saying that readers can take the books on an airplane or to the beach. “They’re fun and you want to read them.” To the “average person, it feels like a book,” Dennis added.
Covers:
Artist Lee Bermejo will be providing illustrations for the cover of all of the Vertigo Crime books, with each drawing incorporated into a book-specific design element to give it a more traditional book appeal.
Titles:
initial two title launch (previously announce in 2008):
- Filthy Rich, by Brian Azzarello and Victor Santos.
- Dark Entries, by best-selling Scottish author Ian Rankin and illustrated by Werther Dell’Edera.
New titles revealed:
- Area Ten, by Christos Gage, art by Chris Samnee.
- The Bronx Kill, by Peter Milligan, art by James Romberger.
- A Sickness in the Family, by Denise Mina, art by Antonio Fuzo (currently drawing some GI Joe projects.)
- The Chill, by writer Jason Star.
- Cowboys, by Gary Phillips and Brian Hurtt.
More books are in the pipeline, but these are the next books to be rolled out after September.
WILDSTORM
POINT BLANK and SLEEPER (both by Ed Brubaker):
Kanalz said that both Point Blank and Sleeper are returning to print, combining Sleeper into an omnibus style collection
RESIDENT EVIL: FIRE AND ICE (and more):
Wildstorm will collect Resident Evil: Fire and Ice illustrated Lee Bermejo as well as some of Lee’s original Resident Evil series when Wildstorm originally held the license to the game.
ZUDA ONLINE
BAYOU and HIGH MOON:
The news didn’t stop at digital comics. Zuda mainstays “Bayou” and “High Moon,” will both be collected in print this year, marking the publisher’s first foray outside the digital realm. This is just the first of many Zuda transitions to come according to Perazza, who explained the crossover is all part of the plan. “It is our intention to ultimately collect all of the series and put them out in print,” said Perazza.
MARVEL
X-MEN:
McCann said that there are no major plans for original graphic novels, but Chris Claremont is writing an “X-Men” OGN for the French market. Art is by Milo Manara
ACTS OF VENGEANCE:
Brevoort: Acts of Vengeance collection this year.
Bendis was asked about his use of the Beyonder, which led to some jokes about the character’s hairstyle. “That being said, SECRET WARS 2 OMNIBUS comes out in April,” McCann said. “Yes, buy it and read to find out what a horrible, horrible comic it is,” Bendis said.
Will the Joe Kelly or Christopher Priest runs on DEADPOOL be collected? “Anything’s possible,” said Buckley. “We had some problems with our archives of comics in the ’90s, but we’ll probably get to that stuff.”
MARVEL Motion Comics
Regarding the new motion comics titles:
- Once you do enough of these motion comics, is there a possibility you’ll bundle these into a DVD? Buckley: Yes.
motion comics format:
(I suppose the following quote means that we will get more art in the DVD collections then in the future printed collections)
- Is there artwork that Maleev has to do for the motion comic that doesn’t make it into the print comic? Maleev: Yes. I work in the digital comic format first, then I figure out how to fit pieces of that into the comic book.
DARK HORSE
STAR WARS: OLD REPUBLIC (new online comic):
Atkins told fans that Dark Horse will eventually be publishing a print trade paperback of Old Republic.
THE GOON:
There will be three trade paperbacks this year collecting the 2008 run. Allie explained that after the success of the Hellboy movies, the book reps that Dark Horse works with, who sell to Borders and other mainstream retailers, “were looking for the next Hellboy, and they think The Goon is that thing.” They’re expecting great things, he added. “It’s been one of my favorite books since before it was Dark horse. It’s gonna be fun good stuff going forward.”
Larry Marder’s BEANWORLD:
Larry Marder’s Beanworld will be collected into three trade paperbacks this year, and one new trade as well, Atkins said. It’s “very simply drawn, which wasn’t popular at the time, with really big themes about life,” Atkins explained. “It’s geared toward younger readers, but has a lot of older themes. The first collection is coming out later this month.”
SOLOMON KANE, by Scott Allie and Mario Gueverra:
Mike Mignola will illustrate the trade cover, which looks like an old pulp magazine.
Guy Davis’s THE MARQUIS:
Guy Davis’s The Marquis – which previously published two trades through Oni Press – will be coming to Dark Horse “because Guy’s working with us and he wants to bringing everything under one umbrella,” Allie explained. Both previous trades will be combined in one huge book with a 40 page sketchbook in November, and 2010 will bring new Marquis material.
PIXU
Pixu, ”a very bizarre horror comic,” will be getting a hardcover collection in July. It features work by Cloonan, Ba, Moon and others, and it ships the month after their Slayer one-shot.
IMAGE COMICS
WALKING DEAD:
The Walking Dead Compendium, which will collect issues #1-#48.
SPAWN:
New versions of the early Spawn trades (labeled as Spawn: Origins)
DAWN by Joseph Michael Linsner:
A hardcover collection of all the Dawn stories ever printed
Josh Howard’s DEAD@17:
Howard said Dead@17 will continue as Image as a series of miniseries. Before the debut he plans to release a collection of all of the previous series.
IDW
A cover was shown for PARKER, the first of Darwyn Cooke’s four adaptations of Richard Stark’s novels. Each will be a stand-alone hardcover, Ryall said.
Chris Eliopoulous’s DESPERATE TIMES:
“A massive collection” of Chris Eliopoulous’s Desperate Times will be coming out.
John Byrne’s NEXT MEN and DANGER UNLIMITED:
John Byrne’s Next Men will be getting hardcover, color editions, and a Danger Unlimited trade paperback will include Danger Unlimited, Babe and other short Byrne stories.
RIP KIRBY:
Mullaney is also working on a collection of Alex Raymond’s Rip Kirby. Ryall explained that Raymond was “essentially the first photo-real artists out there” and an influence on many popular creators.
IDW TENTH ANNIVERSARY:
In May, on their tenth anniversary, IDW will release two books. One will be a complete cover gallery of every comic they’ve ever published, and the second an oral history of IDW including interviews with Gene Simmons, Clive Barker and other people who have shaped the company. There will also be new stories starring IDW characters, including Fallen Angel, Locke & Key and Popbot. Ryall explained that Locke & Key operates as a framing sequence, unlocking worlds of the IDW comics.
“We’ve been talking to Berkeley for two years about this,” Ryall said of IDW intent to collect the entirety of Berkeley Breathed’s BLOOM COUNTY into hardcover editions. He described Breathed as “amazingly humble” and stated that the creator “didn’t think references to Gary Hart would still resonate.”
GI JOE and TRANSFORMER fans were told that they will have their own dedicated panel on Sunday, but Ryall did mention two hardcover picture books for kids that were written by himself and Schmidt.
The final plugs were for two books not published by IDW. INSIDERS GUIDE TO CREATING COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS, by Schmidt, and COMIC BOOKS 101, by Ryall and Tipton, are both available from Impact Comics.
IDW on Itunes:
Ryall said, “More and more we’re going to be expanding” into electronic distribution methods, including iTunes, where “Zombies vs. Robots went live this morning.” IDW will also be “experimenting with motion capture and animated comics” later this year.
ASPEN
Trade Paperbacks:
Mastromauro described the company’s trade paperback initiative this year, noting the five trades that were released in the last year, and their plans to have a collected edition released by the company every three to four months. Upcoming releases are Soulfire vol. 1, Soulfire Reign, and Fathom; The Definitive Edition the last of which was a years-long process to culling and compile. The last collection was described by Mastromauro as their most important ever, with their Michael Turner Tribute, with involvement by almost everyone in comics.
RADICAL PUBLISHING
CHOLLY & FLYTRAP:
Meanwhile, when introducing Arthur Suydam, Berger announced that Suydam’s series Cholly & Flytrap would be released in a trade paperback collection.
OBLIVION illustrated novel (not a regular graphic novel):
Levine explained that Kosinski’s new project is not a comic but rather an illustrated novel. “We do various formats and have various divisions,” the publisher said, noting that even its comic book format is somewhat unconventional–many of Radical’s titles are published in 48-52 page installments at $4.99, resulting in fewer issues per miniseries but, in Levine’s words, “more meat” in each issue. “We also do graphic novels, one contained story. But we’re doing like the French do sometimes, we’re doing illustrated novels,” Levine said. “And the reason why we’re doing it, is when you come across people like Joe Kosinski, who maps out this real intricate world that is also character-driven, you sometimes want to, like a novel, do a lot more backstory, develop the dialogue more extensively, develop the characters more extensively. But you don’t get to do that in six to eight issues because you’ve only got so many bubbles to a page.
“So Radical is known for its artwork, but we also want to be known not only for our high concept but also for our story, how well our stories are developed. So we’re going to do that format, and ‘Oblivion’ will be our first illustrated book,” he continued. “It will have about a 125-130 pages, and will open up with about 3-4 pages of text, like a novel, but it will be an 11×14 book, and then you’ll have fully-painted images. Some of them will be splash pages, some will be fully-painted single pages. We’ll have forty to fifty images, and each will represent maybe 2-3 pages that you’ve read. There are some artists that don’t really want to do sequentials, because they just want to do art or they just want to do covers, or they just want to do gallery stuff. So this is a way of really telling Joe’s story in a very intricate way, in a very specific way, allowing the artist to breathe as well.”
New Comic Format:
In addition, Levine said, after this Comic Con, Radical would no longer publish 22-page single issues, instead collecting six-issue arcs into three 48-page books. “It’s just so much easier for readers to invest themselves in 48 pages rather than 22,” he said. “We’ll keep it at $4.99 so it’s cheaper than two issues.
