The big news that’s got the internet all buzzing is that Steve Rogers is going to be Reborn as Captain America, but I say he never really went away. Sure, he may be lying dead in a grave in the 616 Marvel Universe, but he is alive and well in three other current titles (OK, maybe just two, we’re still waiting for Loeb and Sale’s Captain America: White). So in honor of Cap #600 (or #51) or Captain America Comics 70th Anniversary Special #1 or Reborn #1 or whatever we take a look at the Collected Editions of Captain America through the years – Golden Atlas, Silver, Modern, and beyond.

Also this week a look at the Collected Edition non-announcements from Wizard World Philly and Heroes Con, the non-happenings of the DC Showcase Presents line and Robert Crumb and his $500 Book of Genesis. Good Lord!

All this and the New Releases of the Week.

Just doing a bit up catch-up today. Probably the biggest non news story this week is that Marvel will be publishing softcover versions of their Masterworks. Has everyone in the collected edition world forgot that Marvel did this years ago exclusively through Barnes and Noble? They published twelve of them and they contained the same contents as the Hardcover “reMasterworks” ones. I said then and I’ll say it again, that Marvel should have been doing this all along! More on this in Thursday’s podcast #185. For now, as you can see not many other news items to go over.

  • The Detroit Free Press concludes their Annual Football Preview – Superheroes! The remaining player/hero profile is MSU-bound QB Andrew Maxwell as Superman.
  • Richard, FPI Blog continues his The Uncollecteds A-Z part 2 J through R
  • Dan Nadel, Comics Comics, reports that PictureBox is going to publish a collection of Ogden Whitney’s romance and sci-fi comics in late 2009 or early 2010. Co-edited by Frank Santoro, Bill Boichel and little ol’ me. We are scouring the earth for any and all Whitney material. We aim to solve a few mysteries with this one and should get down to work on it as soon as Mr. Santoro stops blogging for a minute and finished Cold Heat! Ha! Just kidding. Sort of. No, but seriously, Frank is very close to finishing and we will send the book to the printer in December in order to have the books in stores everywhere in April.
  • Top Cow Productions, Inc. announced it will publish the first, complete story arc of William Harms’ Impaler in a new trade paperback that will debut this October, and then will launch a new series for the property in December.
  • DC Comics presents a special, new edition of the WATCHMEN TP, featuring a brand-new cover by artist extraordinaire Dave Gibbons. Available for order now, the WATCHMEN INTERNATIONAL EDITION TP is created especially for the international market, and is also available to retailers in the U.S. and Canada exclusively through Diamond.

  • Review: Collected Editions guest-blogger Doug Glassman on Kingdom Come TPB (DC Comics).
