Thanks in large part of the Comic Book movies the past 15 years there have been a slew of comic book TV shows. Some good, some bad, some live action and some cartoon. I’ve been good at trying them all out but none have captured my attention like Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on Disney XD. What’s nice about it from an adult perspective is that it is mixing in elements of the recent live action films. Iron Man/Tony Stark has revealed himself and is portrayed just like the way Robert Downey Jr. did. Bruce Banner/Hulk is straight from the Ed Norton mold and I’m willing to bet that Thor and Captain America are going to be similar representations of what we’ll see next summer. This said, the action and story has moved fast and there hasn’t been too much time wasted on background and origins. Another nice addition is a nod that this universe is large and ever expanding. Logan (Wolverine) has been seen and Hank Pym even mentions his colleague Reed Richards. No sign of Spider-Man or Daredevil yet, but there’s always hope. If you haven’t done so already please find time to check out the show and after you do come on back and share with me your favorite Avengers moments. It can be anything from single issue story lines, collected editions including extras and bonus features, one-shots, and even single panels. This past summer movie season had some highs – Iron Man 2 and Toy Story and one monumental low – Jonah Hex. But in all it was a fun time that included a wide variety of characters including Superheroes, Aliens, Mercenaries, Sorcerers, Vampires and Rock ‘n Roll Teenagers. Today I take a look back at 15 movies and their subsequent collected edition or other periodical tie-ins.

The Women of Marvel Comics Part 3: Black Widow

Soviet-spy, Natasha Romanoff, first appeared with Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #52 (April 1964), although her trademark skintight black costume didn’t appear until The Amazing Spider-Man #86 (July 1970). She’s had several solo adventures and team-ups over the years and she’s even been a member of The Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and The Champions. Her most famous collaboration has been with Daredevil beginning with Daredevil (vol. 1) #81. More recently Black Widow has become a member of Steve Rogers black-ops wing of the Avengers, dubbed the Secret Avengers.

Let’s take a look at some of her collected editions:

  • Marvel Premiere Classic: Black Widow: The Sting Of The Widow (Variant Volume 28) Collects Tales Of Suspense #52 (1964), Amazing Spider-Man #86 (1970), Amazing Adventures #1-8 (1970) and Daredevil #81 (1971)
  • Marvel Premiere Classic: Black Widow: Web Of Intrigue (Variant Volume 40) Collects Marvel Fanfare (1983) #10-13; Bizarre Adventures #25 and Black Widow: The Coldest War GN
  • Black Widow Deadly Origin and Black Widow Things They Say About Her Guest-starring the Winter Soldier, Wolverine , Nick Fury and Daredevil.
  • Black Widow TP Collecting both mega-popular Marvel Knights limited series in one volume.
  • Black Widow And Marvel Girls The world’s most efficient spy teams up with Storm, She-Hulk, Enchantress, and Spider-Woman in four all new, all-ages adventures.

She was portrayed by Scarlett Johansson in the 2010 film Iron Man 2 and will also be in The Avengers come 2012.

It’s that time of year again: the kickoff of the Summer Blockbusters!

Iron Man 2 came out last week and I pick up where I left off two years ago with a rundown of Iron Man Collected Editions that have been published since the first movie. A lot has come out: Classic material from Tales Of Suspense, New trades of the entire Armor Wars Saga, his Heroes Return in the late 1990’s and his current run (which is to be expected). I tell you what to buy and what to hold off on and even what you may want to purchase as a digital edition. Speaking of digital, check out my review of the Iron Man Central App over at my sister site DGTL Comics.

Also on the show this week there are printing concerns with the recent Absolute GL Rebirth, advanced notice on The Flash: The Dastardly Death Of The Rogues and War of Supermen hardcovers and the passing of Frank Frazetta. Finally a reminder that the Motor City Con is this weekend May 14-16 and the Summit City Con is May 22.

It’s time once again for my annual Adopt a Character show. You are welcome to play along, it very easy and fun to do. Simply pick a character that you have always wanted to know more about and go out and do it! You have a full year to get acquainted with the character (or team) by reading as much you can. You may recall in 2007 I chose Thor, in 2008 I went with Luke Cage (with a bit of Iron Fist thrown in) and last year I read the entire 27 volume series of Will Eisner’s The Spirit.

For 2010 I chose Spider-Man, a character that I haven’t really read much of since the 1980′s. I have a very specific reason for doing so and I explain why in the podcast. Sure, I’ve kept up with Spidey’s career, it’s hard not too, but this time I’m going way back to the beginning and starting from Amazing Fantasy #15. Thanks to the Marvel Masterworks program (11 volumes so far) I get to read them in full color with Steve Ditko. Speaking of Ditko, I’ve decided to study his work more in depth, as well.

Also on this short show, I go over the page count flub of the upcoming Invincible Iron Man HC Volume 1 and Diamond 2009 Gem Award Nominees including the nominess for 2009 Reprint TP or HC of the Year.
