Before I ever read a comic book, I watched TV. Like most kids in Detroit, Channel 20 was a favorite showing reruns of Johnny Socko’s Flying Robot or Ultra Man. Channel 50, on the other hand, had reruns of the 1960′s Batman. I clearly remember watching every episode and priding myself on knowing each and every character. I even tried to piece my own continuity, which looking back on it now, was a complete waste of time. But even as a kid all that really mattered was Julie Newmar and Yvonne Craig. I loved the old TV shows: Batman, Hulk, Greatest American Hero, and heck I was even turned back on to Smallville when the JSA arrived.

TwoMorrow’s has now published a complete retrospective of all the superhero television shows called The Age of TV Heroes. It’s extensively researched and written by Jason Hofius and George Khoury. The book is full of interviews and rare photographs from years gone by. Every single live-action show ever having to do with a superhero is represented, which if you think about it is quiet a feat in of itself. I showcase that book today, but if you want to get the authors perspective you can listen to the TwoMorrow’s Tune-In Podcast with Jason and George from last summer when the book was in its final stages.

CCL #191 – Trading The Defenders

In preparing for the show this week, I decided that I would cover the 100th Marvel Masterworks The Defenders Volume 1. Little did I realize that it was actually missing the first three try-out pseudo teams-ups from Doctor Strange #183, Sub-Mariner #22 and Hulk #126, all of which was included in the Essential Defenders Volume 1. It then seemed wise to compare the books as part of my When Trade Collide series that I do from time to time. After writing up my notes for that, I began to speculate on what a MMW Volume 2 might look like and that’s when the Marvel Premiere Classic edition of The Avengers/Defenders War came into play. It got to be too much and my initial review of one single book leads me to a whole gambit that is today’s feature presentation. I look at all the collected editions of Marvels first anti-team and a few runs that have yet to be collected and yes, I do dive head first into the chicken soup that would be a Volume 2 of The Defenders Masterworks series.

I also cover a bit on the upcoming Trinity Volume 1 trade paperback (DC Comics), the 2008 Ignatz Awards, the Product and Shipping Changes and the New Releases of the Week.

This past weekend I was thinking of doing more interviews for the main feature of the podcast. But, as you know, the CCL is unlike other comic books podcasts, in that, artists and writers are not the main focus of a collected edition – the editors and management are. So Monday morning I sat down to do some work and fan out some e-mails. As it turns out I had an e-mail come to me! It was from a new company called Radical Publishing out of LA. The company is owned and operated by Barry Levine, who is a long time producer and has worked on several movies and soundtracks. Currently he is the Executive Producer of Rex Mundi, starring Johnny Depp. He has now started up Radical and he wants to get the word out about his company and all the exciting projects that are in the works. We also go into a bit of his background and involvement with 30 Days of Night and the exciting news that Radical’s own Hercules has been optioned for a feature film in association with Spyglass Entertainment.

To start off the show, I first talk a bit on Marvel’s May solicitations, shipping and product changes and a very short rundown of the New Releases of the Week.
