Vanguard Announces Updates to Frazetta Classics Comet Collection

February 3, 2011
By

-Press Release

Vanguard Frazetta Classics: The Complete Johnny Comet will collect all the famous Frazetta newspaper daily strips from the 1950s, but will also include all the Sundays in full-color–which has NEVER been done before! Running the Sundays in color, in addition to running dailies from Frank’s personal proofs at 3600 ppi, top quality printing, paper, and essays by William Stout and J. David Spurlock, makes the book far superior to all prior out-of-print collections. The book is at the printer now and will be released in March. Original Diamond solicitation orders were canceled due to updates in content and release date. The proper, current comic shop reference number is DCD ITEM NO: DEC101101. For booktrade reference ISBN: 1-934331-38-4

Vanguard publisher, J. David Spurlock said, “Originally, it was to all be shot in black and white from Frank’s personal set of proofs, but the Sundays were missing. We scanned the dailies at 3600 ppi for quality and clarity. Tracking down originals to run the Sundays from proved impossible. Williams Stout, who wrote an essay for the book, mentioned to the graphic designer, Randall Dahlk, that he had a number of Sundays from the old newspapers and suggested we collect the Sundays in color–which has NEVER been done before! Sounds simple — it wasn’t. After much research, we were able to piece together the collection of nearly 60-year-old pulp, newsprint color strips from various sources — it was like an archeological dig. Then came unbelievable man-hours spent creating new, digitally-restored color-corrected separations… In the end it was all worth it for the ultimate Frazetta Comet collection”

This book collects the complete, pulse-pounding, illustrated adventures of midget-car racer Johnny Comet. Legendary, Hall of Fame illustrator Frank Frazetta leads us through Comet’s high-speed adventures aided by writer Earl Baldwin and Indy 500 winner Peter DePaolo. Frazetta is best known as an icon of fantastic art, for his oil paintings of buxom beauties and brawny barbarians (Conan, Death Dealer, Tarzan), which have set record prices on the art market. However, Frazetta’s diverse career included movie posters, humor work, album covers and, in 1952, landing the contract to illustrate Johnny Comet’s newspaper-strip adventures was a dream come true for the then-burgeoning artist. His Johnny Comet work proved to be a hallmark that Frazetta was proud of the rest of his fabled career. Vanguard launches a multi-volume collection of Frazetta’s classic works with The Complete Johnny Comet which, is reproduced from the artist’s own proofs along with meticulously-restored full-color Sunday strips. It has been 20 years since Johnny Comet has been collected. With this new, Vanguard Frazetta Classics edition, featuring state-of-the-art reproduction techniques and an essay by award-winning illustrator, William Stout, Frazetta’s Comet classics are beautifully back in print, as never before.

Vanguard to Publish Early Work of Fantasy Art Icon, Frazetta

-Press Release

Frazetta Management and acclaimed publisher, Vanguard Productions announced a new publishing relationship on March 8th, 2010. Vanguard is now shedding some light with details on the new Vanguard Frazetta Classics series. Vanguard will be releasing ALL of the Dan Brand/White Indian material by Frank Frazetta in top quality, full-color editions as part of an exclusive publishing agreement authorized by the Hall of Fame illustrator, Frank Frazetta as part of the new Vanguard Frazetta Classics line. Upon signing the exclusive publishing agreement with Vanguard, the legendary artist said, “We’ve known Vanguard publisher J. David Spurlock for many years. David helped on our Painting with Fire documentary and we helped him on Vanguard’s Roy Krenkel, Wally Wood, and J. Allen St.John books. It’s a natural that we should work together. I’m looking forward to seeing the quality job they do on the new Frazetta books”

Following the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con premiere of a revised edition of the 2008 hit, The Definitive Frazetta Reference which, takes on the challenge of cataloging every Frazetta item ever published, Vanguard announced, Volume 1 of the Vanguard Frazetta Classics: The Complete Johnny Comet — collecting all of Frazetta’s famous 1950s newspaper strip. This book features–for the first time ever—daily newspaper strips reproduced from Frank’s own personal proofs and Sunday pages collected in color for the first time. Vanguard publisher Spurlock said, “The Frazetta Johnny Comet Collection will also have a new essay by award-winning illustrator, William Stout.”

Volume 2 of the new Vanguard Frazetta Classics line is the Complete Frazetta White Indian collection. White Indian was Frazetta’s longest run on any single comic-book feature and has never been collected in a quality book format. Spurlock said, “Johnny Comet will be released in March, 2011 and White Indian in April, with more Vanguard Frazetta volumes to come.”

Rob Pistella of Frazetta Management said, “Accept no substitute. The Vanguard editions are the only classic Frazetta comics collections that were authorized by Frank Frazetta. We are fully participating and providing the best source material in existence to Vanguard, and we are eagerly looking forward to their release. Frank was thrilled to know that David Spurlock was going to memorialize his work through Vanguard Productions.”

Frazetta’s White Indian Collection at Vanguard and Dark Horse

July 15, 2010
By

If any of you followed me on Twitter today, you would have seen that there is an issue with the forthcoming Frank Frazetta White Indian collected edition.

Back in March the Frazetta estate entered into an agreement with Vanguard Productions and even launched the Vanguard Frazetta Classics.  Two books have been announced: Vanguard Frazetta Classics Series Volume 1:  The Complete Johnny Comet, and the Vanguard Frazetta Classics Series Volume 2: The Complete White Indian Collection.

That’s all well and good but just days ago Dark Horse released their October solicitations which included thier own The Classic Comics Archives Vol 1: The White Indian.

Very odd indeed. So I wrote J. David Spurlock of Vanguard and this is what he had to say, I just got off the phone with Mike Richardson at Dark Horse. I expect that we will issue a joint press release later but basically, Vanguard will release WHITE INDIAN Vol 1: By Frazetta, and Dark Horse will do WHITE INDIAN ARCHIVES Vol 2 of all all the other White Indian material.

That must have been some phone call.

Spurlock had previously stated that, “(White Indian is) well into production now with more Vanguard volumes to come.”  So it’s no surprise that it’ll will be publishing the first book. But I wonder how this problem even came about. I know that Dark Horse does have some rights to the Frazetta estate (they will be publishing the Thun’da, King of the Congo Archives), but Image also has reprint rights. Perhaps they want a piece of the action, too?

In any event, it will be good to have this material reprinted. I’ll post more information as it comes available.

And thanks to Rich Johnston, Bleeding Cool,  for reminding me about the Frazetta v. Vangurad/Spurlock lawsuit. Very interesting.

UPDATE: David Spurlock sent me the cover art for the Vanguard collection. You can compare it to the discontinued Dark Horse book.
