CCL Podcast #288 – Jim Starlin’s Dreadstar

Collected Comics Library Podcast #288
32,892Kb; 32m 55s

Jim Starlin’s Dreadstar was an epic in the making. I’m not just talking about the original run of comic books from the 1980’s. The same could be said for the two collected editions from Dynamite: Dreadstar HC (2004) and Dreadstar: The Beginning HC (2010). The Milky Way is destroyed and now the lone survivor, Vanth Dreadstar, must stop a war or another galaxy or it will suffer the same fate. Dreadstar is about a better life for all of us, even in the eyes of complete despair. Jim Starlin is, of course, a master when it comes to sci-fi comics. He has an eye for futuristic artwork while keeping his characters grounded so we, the reader, can relate – in both heroics and triumph and on the flip side mass destruction and sadness. And now for the first time the first four parts (The Metamorphosis Odyssey, The Price, Plan M and The Secret of Z) have been collected over two volumes, both painstakingly restored and overseen by Starlin himself. The books are gorgeous, and the story, itself, is a classic and should be read by any science fiction fan. Today, I take a closer look at the books and the wild publishing history. Warning: spoilers abound (which is something that I don’t usually do).

CCL Podcast #245 – Viruses and Solicitations

Collected Comics Library Podcast #245
23,042Kb; 24m 18s

If you’ve come by the blog or downloaded the podcasts recently you’ll notice that things have been out of sync. That’s because both my kids have been sick (at different times) and my computer got a nasty trojan which caused me to be offline for a few days. I’m slowing getting things back to normal. The computer is running great thanks to a few upgrades and the kids are healthy enough to be back at school.

Because of all the excitement going on, I didn’t have time to review any books this week, but I was able to update the New Releases Schedule and Checklists with all the latest solicitations from DC, Marvel, and Dark Horse and a full update the Library section of the site. I talk about a few of those books today, as well as, the addition of Fantastic Four Annual #12 to the Marvel Masterworks Inhumans Volume 2 and another delay to the DC Comics Classics Library: Shazam! Monster Society of Evil (now slated for September 2010). Finally, I provide an eBay Market Watch that includes New X-Men Omnibus, Absolute Planetary Book One, Art of Iron Man the Movie Hardcover and the Deadpool Volume 1 Secret Invasion Hardcover – which is just off the charts!

All this and the New Releases of the Week.

  • My friends over at the Collected Editions Blog has some news and opinions on some upcoming DC books including: Wednesday Comics HC, Superboy: The Redemption, Gotham Central Book 3: On The Freak Beat, JSA vs. Kobra, The Shield Vol. 1: Kicking Down the Door, and The Atomic Knights
  • And this big news of the week is saved for last: Fantagraphics Announces Six New Golden Age Collections: Four Color Fear: Forgotten Horror Comics Of The 1950s (June 2010), Setting The Standard: Alex Toth at Standard Comics 1952-54 (Fall 2010), The Road To Plastic Man: The Golden Age Comics of Jack Cole 1937-41 (TBD), Away From Home: EC Artists at Other Companies (TBD), Creeping Death From Neptune: Basil Wolverton’s Sci-Fi and Horror Comics 1938-55 (TBD), and The Comic Book Frankenstein: The Monster According to Dick Briefer (TBD). This is very welcome material in the wake of Gemstone’s EC line falling behind. Fantagraphics is an excellent company to do a massive project like this and the entire line will be headed by comics historian and editor Greg Sadowski (Supermen! The First Wave of Comic Book Heroes 1936-1941). These will be welcome additions to my bookshelf.
