The June 2010 Comic Book Sales Figures Estimated (Comics Sold to North American Comics Shops as Reported by Diamond Comic Distributors) were recently released and as far as the Trade Paperbacks and Collected Editions go Batman Arkham Asylum: Madness HC came in at #1. Let’s a take a look at the Top 10. As usual, I’ll be sitting down with John Mayo on his Comic Book Page Podcast, to go over these numbers and more very soon.

Top Selling Collected Editions (Trade Paperbacks, Hardcovers and Graphic Novels)

Batman Arkham Asylum: Madness HC ($19.99, DC) – In the wake of the other Batman OGN, Joker by Brian Azzarello, author Sam Keith lets you walk inside Arkham Asylum for 24 hours. Looks like it’s paying off.
Chew Volume 2: International Flavor TP (MR) ($12.99, Image) – The sleeper hit of last summer isn’t a sleeper anymore. Time to catch up on the book that everyone else is reading.
Hellboy Volume 10: The Crooked Man & Others TP ($17.99, Dark Horse) – Hellboy is one of those unique titles that sell well in monthly and trade form. My preferred way these days are the Hardcover Library Editions.
Naruto Volume 48 TP ($9.99, Viz) – I don’t know one person (online or real world) who buy these books. But then again I don’t know many teenagers these days.
Final Crisis TP ($19.99, DC) – I love the red skyline of Detroit in the opening pages. Boy, did DC get it right. Looks like every October 30 from 1975-1987.
Batman: R.I.P. TP ($14.99, DC) – I haven’t read this title yet, but I think I’ll catch up with Batman with this trade.
Jonah Hex: No Way Back HC ($19.99, DC/Vertigo) – I’m guessing that more people will buy this book then who liked the movie.
DMZ Volume 8: Hearts And Minds TP (MR) ($16.99, DC/Vertigo) – Another series that I should sit down and read one of these days. Is it on the iPad, yet?
Jack Of Fables Volume 7: The New Adventures Of Jack & Jack TP (MR) ($14.99, DC/Vertigo) – If the word Fables is on the list you can usually find it in the Top 10 every month – trade or hardcover. There’s a damn good reason for that.
Criminal Volume 5: Sinners TP (MR) ($15.99, Marvel/Icon) – I picked up the giant Criminal hardcover last year and I loved every single page of it. If you have not tried this title yet you are really missing some of the best comic book work on the market today.

Comic Con is only days aways and the programming schedule is coming out. One panel that is worth noting:

Thursday July 22, 5:00-6:00 The 5th Annual Comics Podcasting Panel!— Five years ago, the comics podcasting stars came together on one panel for the first time in San Diego, and now they’re back to discuss comics, podcasting, and how the comic book industry has changed since that first panel. Podcasters appearing on the panel include John Siuntres (Word Balloon), Josh Flanagan (iFanboy), Jimmy Aquino (Comic News Insider),Brian “Pants” Christman (Comic Geek Speak), Bob Bretall (The Comic Book Page), and Cameron Hatheway (Cammy’s Comic Corner). The panel is moderated by BrickJournal editor Joe Meno. Saturday, July 24, 12:30-1:30 Spotlight on Brian Michael Bendis— The controversial Marvel writer and Comic-Con special guest Brian Michael Bendis turns his spotlight panel into a live taping of the popular Word Balloon Bendis tapes. Word Balloon podcast host John Suitress will moderate the panel and take questions from the audience, with nothing off limits. Bendis will also be giving away limited-edition variant covers of his new creator-owned series Scarlet. Room 6DE

Sunday, July 25, 10:00-11:00 Jack Kirby Tribute— It’s time once again to pay tribute to Jack “King” Kirby, the prolific writer/artist who co-created some of the world’s most famous superheroes, including the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Thor, Captain America, the New Gods, and many more. Kirby biographer and friend Mark Evanier (Kirby: King of Comics) hosts this annual Comic-Con tradition and is joined this year by writers Marv Wolfman(Tomb of Dracula, New Teen Titans), and Kurt Busiek (Astro City, JLA/Avengers) and other Kirby fanatics to discuss the King. I’ll be taking a look at the list over the weekend and give my thoughts on Monday and you can look for a podcast of John Mayo and I either very soon (pre-Comic Con) or very late (post-Comic Con). At just a glance at the Graphic Novel and Trade Paperbacks you’ll notice that there are four books from the Vertigo (DC) imprint and no Marvel 616 book made the cut!

The May 2010 Comic Book Sales Figures Estimated (Comics Sold to North American Comics Shops as Reported by Diamond Comic Distributors) were recently released and as far as the Trade Paperbacks and Collected Editions go Ex Machina Vol. 9 Ring Out the Old came in at #1. Top Selling Collected Editions (Trade Paperbacks, Hardcovers and Graphic Novels)

Ex Machina Vol. 9 Ring Out The Old ($14.99) – Wildstorm’s hot property continues to sell well in TPB and so do the Deluxe HC’s. The monthly series is almost over. I think people were a little late to this title (like me) and are just now discovering it. Perhaps with enough interest Ex Machinacould spin-off something new in the future.
Sweet Tooth Vol. 1 Out Of The Woods ($9.99) – DC / Vertigo has a nice habit of pricing the Volume 1 trades at the $10 mark. It’s a good way to suck you in. Jeff Lemire’s star is getting more bright by the month. Be sure to read The Essex County Trilogy so you can tell all your friends that you read him when he was an unknown.
Invincible Vol. 12 Still Standing ($16.99) and…
Walking Dead HC Vol. 5 ($34.99) - there’s just no stopping the Image Comics Robert Kirkman-verse. Walking Dead is coming to a TV near you and I bet Invincible won’t be far behind. I’d like to see a cool Spawn inspired animated show myself.
Scalped Vol. 6 The Gnawing ($14.99) Sweet Tooth above – replace Jeff Lemire with Jason Aaron and read The Other Side.
Wednesday Comics ($49.99) – Could this offering from DC Comics be the the CCL’s Best Collected Edition of the Year? With 6 months into 2010 it’s got a good shot. I do have to admit that I fully believe that people liked the original newspaper presentation but didn’t exactly know what to make of it after they read it. Do you throw it in the recycle bin? Do you save it? And if so how and for how long? Or do you drop it after 4 issues, like I did, and wait for the collected edition? NOTE: I’ll be reviewing this book on this week’s podcast.
Deadpool Vol. 3 X Marks Spot ($15.99) Deadpool sells! Not much else to it!
Hellsing Vol. 10 ($13.99) This long running title from Dark Horse sneaked up on me and I have no recollection of how Volumes 1-9 faired on previous lists.
Invincible Iron Man Vol. 3 Most Wanted Book 2 ($14.99) Well, well, a book from Marvel. Good thing Iron Man is a big star and had a movie come out in May to help this trade paperback along. Otherwise no Marvel (616) book would’ve cracked the Top 10.
Kick Ass Premiere HC ($24.99) More movie hangovers for Marvel. This time from their Icon line.

Comments:
Wildstorm’s Ex Machina came in strong at #1 edging out the fan favorite Deadpool by 912 units. Star Wars The Clone Wars also had an impressive showing due in large part to the popular Cartoon Network series. If you’re like me you’re a fan of both. It’s no surprise to see Batman The Cat And The Bat by Fabian Nicieza and Kevin Maguire crack the Top 10, both are outstanding at their craft. And I guess you just can’t get rid of Marvel Zombies. IDW’s Rocketeer Complete Collection actually had two placings on the list; the Standard Hardcover (above) and the Deluxe Hardcover at rank #52. Finally, if you are keeping track of the bigger books, Marvel’s Tomb Of Dracula Omnibus HC Vol 2 (keep in mind that this was delayed from October) came in at rank #85 and Daredevil Omnibus HC Vol 2 By Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev came in at rank #96. A good showing for each.

Looks like 2010 is starting the way 2009 ended – with IDW. Publisher Chris Ryall posted the artwork for The Bloom County Library Volume 2 1982-1984; it’s due out in April. He also writes on his blog that IDW will be offering a special signed edition of Volume 1 that same month.

Also Diamond Announces 2009 GEM AWARD Nominees. The award winners will be announced in early February. Here are the nominess for 2009 Reprint TP or HC of the Year:

Diamond’s Spring 2010 Book Catalog

Here’s something that bound to get you to stop working and completely waste your time.
Last night I was e-mailed a link of Diamond’s Spring Book Catalog .pdf (Products with Release Date from January – April 2010).

I’m not sure how long the link will work (forever, perhaps). Also please note that, for whatever reason, DC Comics, Fantagraphics, Boom! Studios, Drawn and Quarterly and few others are not listed.
