30 Day Comic Book Challenge

todoWe all need a kick in the pants to get motivated. I came up with an easy 30 Day Comic Book Challenge to break out of the regular routine and try new things as it relates to the world of comic books, collected editions and even animation. Of course, you don’t have to do it in strict order nor do you really have to do it all in 30 days. It’s really a guideline. Please feel free to add more suggestions in the comments and share with your friends.

How many can you do? How did you do it?

Day 1: Read at least one page from a comic that you’ve been meaning to read or reread
Day 2: Read a comic book in a room or setting that you’ve never done so before
Day 3: Read an illustrated children’s book
Day 4: Read something from a publisher you’ve never read before
Day 5: Bring some kid-friendly comics to a pediatric doctor’s office or urgent care and leave them there
Day 6: Read a web comic
Day 7: Read a political cartoon and share your thoughts with the creator
Day 8: Read a comic book on your phone
Day 9: Read a comic based on a movie or TV show
Day 10: Read a public domain book
Day 11: Read a Golden Age comic
Day 12: Go to library to see what kind of selection they have – check out any five books
Day 13: Listen to a comic book related movie soundtrack
Day 14: Read a Silver Age comic
Day 15: Read a Comix
Day 16: Try to avoid reading the word balloons in any Jack Kirby comic – can you follow the story?
Day 17: Read a black and white superhero comic – do you miss the colors?
Day 18: Listen to a comic book podcast
Day 19: Use StumbleUpon and discover a new blog/website
Day 20: Read a biography in graphic novel form
Day 21: Watch all the extra features on a Classic Animated Disney DVD
Day 22: Read every comic strip from the local newspaper for 7 days
Day 23: Read a funny animal comic
Day 24: Read a comic that you don’t think you’ll like
Day 25: Visit an LCS you’ve never been to and have the owner pick something for you
Day 26: Open to a random page in Watchmen, study it for 10 minutes
Day 27: Read a War genre comic
Day 28: Read a “work-safe” comic in plain sight of others during lunch hour
Day 29: Read anything that has ever been nominated for an Eisner Award
Day 30: You now have inspiration – draw and/or write anything comic related (a review perhaps), don’t be afraid and post it online. It takes guts to do so. Be proud of your work.

The Next Step In The Evolution Of The Collected Edition

My 1,000 post!

This website, blog, podcast, etc., has always been and always will be about the comic book reprints and collected editions. And when it comes to those books I’ve always leaned on the higher end market like DC’s Absolute’s, Marvel’s Omnibus’, and other big ticket items.

IDW has really come on strong in this category the past few years starting with with the 30 Days Of Night Slipcase and continuing to the Artist’s Editions of today. Wednesday, we got word that IDW has taken the collected edition genre a step further by announcing IDW Limited. These will be just as the names suggests with limited printing – even low as 10 copies! Here is the official PR:

IDW Publishing is thrilled to announce the launch of IDW Limited, a new division that will specialize in producing high-end, collectible editions of their wide catalog of books. Catering to the loyal and committed fans that have helped make IDW a success, IDW Limited books will feature unique elements like original sketches and creator signatures on luxuriously designed packaging not available anywhere else. These top-of-the-line rarities will aim to enhance and expand existing books, providing beautiful reading and collecting experiences fans will be proud to display on their shelves.
The first book offered from IDW Limited (www.idwlimited.com) will be the four-issue collection of IDW’s best-selling new series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Vol. 1, Change Is Constant. The Deluxe Limited Edition will be released in three tiers, each with extremely low quantities available exclusively through the IDW limited website, IDWLimited.com. Fans can expect hand signatures from TMNT co-creatorKevin Eastman, series artist Dan Duncan, and series writer Tom Waltz, as well as original hand-sketched art from Dan Duncan packaged with each book in a specially hand constructed, deluxe case.

“This edition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Vol. 1: Change Is Constant is nothing short of spectacular,” said Kevin Eastman, co-creator of TMNT. “The Turtles have been presented in a variety of formats over the years, but this book is truly a prized collector’s item for Turtle fans.”

IDW Limited books are offered in multiple tiers so that fans can select the degree of collectability that is important to them. Each print run is hand-numbered and strictly limited. All three tiers include a signature plate signed by the books creators. In addition to signatures, collectors can expect the following:
-Red Label Edition is limited to 175 copies, features a custom cover, is housed in a limited edition slipcase and paired with an artist’s portfolio containing a unique, spot-color sketch of one of the Ninja Turtles done by series artist Dan Duncan.
-Black Label Edition is limited to 25 copies featuring the IDW Limited custom cover and is housed in a hand built traycase, along with an artist’s portfolio containing a multi-color illustration of two classic TMNT characters by series artist Dan Duncan.
-Blue Label Edition, the rarest tier being offered, is limited to only 10 copies! For this special version, series artist Dan Duncan will be creating full color illustrations of the entire Turtle team in action. Each book is packaged with the IDW Limited cover inside a hand built tray case.

According to Jerry Bennington, IDW Limited’s Director, “We wanted to give fans a top-of-the-line creative experience with the books they love in a truly special format.” He went on to add, “these rare editions will not only be special and limited in quantity, they’ll also include unique content found nowhere else. This may be the only way most fans could ever hope to own a signature, sketch or illustration from one of their favorite artists or creators.”
In addition to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, fans can also expect a complete line of limited edition books and merchandise of their favorite titles including Transformers, G.I. Joe, Alan Robert’s Crawl To Me and menton3’s Monocyte this fall, and many more to follow.

Fans are encouraged to visit www.idwlimited.com to sign up for their free newsletter
to receive updates and learn more about the company and it’s top selling books.

TMNT: CHANGE IS CONSTANT DELUXE LIMITED EDITION (RED-$125.00/BLACK-$250.00/BLUE-$350.00; 192 pages; 9” x 12”; hardcover) is now available for pre-order.

Now, I’ve always been bearish when it comes to limited editions, mostly due to comic stores eating them up and selling them on eBay or other markets for a much higher price. This tiered model is a bit different. I don’t see Joe’s Comics running out to buy a Blue Edition only to have it sit on a shelf and make no money for the next 3 years. I hope we, the regular buyers, will get a chance to own these great books and appreciate them for what they are and not just reselling them for a quick buck. IDW CEO Ted Adams says, you’ll only get to buy these books (and other limited items) directly through the IDW website. This way IDW can monitor who the buyers are and to possibly take care of any repeat offenders of this practice.

TMNT is not the only Limited on the docket. Other products include: Transformers, G.I. Joe, Alan Robert’s Crawl To Me, and menton3’s Monocyte. More to come on those, for sure.
