All-Star Batman and Robin (2005–08)
Only 10 issues have been published and the first 9 issues of Frank Miller’s Batman has been collected in both Hardcover and Trade Paperback. The series is suppose to pick up under the new title of Dark Knight: Boy Wonder, it’s unknown when the series will see the light of day.

Batman: Hush (2002–03)
The highly acclaimed Batman #608-619 has been collected in Hardcover, Trade Paperback and as an Absolute edition (2005). The oversized slipcased book includes an all-new cover by Jim Lee and Scott Williams, a Jim Lee Sketchbook, and issue-by-issue commentary by the creative team including writer Jeph Loeb. Additional bonuses are the 2-page origin of Batman (originally seen only on dccomics.com) and the special story from Wizard: The Comics Magazine.

Batman: Gotham Knights (2000)
Originally published in Batman Black and White #1, To Become The Bat was written by Warren Ellis and has been collected in Batman Black and White: Volume 2 Hardcover (2002).

Superman/Batman #26 (The Boys Are Back in Town, 2-pages) (2006)
This special comic was to be the writing debut of Jeph Loeb’s son Sam. Tragically, however, Sam lost his battle with cancer at the tender young age of 17. Many creators, including Jim Lee, stepped up and gave their talents to finish Sam’s work and as it turned out created one of the best comics of the year. Sadly, #26 has not been collected in any form, but you can buy it digitally through Comixology.

It’s always fun to deviate from he traditional review of a comic book collected edition. Today is such a show as I take a look at all of the DC Comics Animated movies, what storylines they are adapted from and where you can find them in print. I even go over the movies that are in production and the proposed and canceled ones, too.

The past few weeks I’ve been savoring DC’s new offering of the Steve Ditko Omnibus Volume 1. This book features two short lived series Shade, The Changing Man (8 issues) and Stalker (4 issues). Both series are visually stunning and the stories are compelling and left me wanting more, sadly that didn’t happen from Ditko, although Shade did come back in a few different incarnations including his own Vertigo series. Look for more Shade in Justice League Dark. Stalker, on the other hand, would fit well in Demon Knights, if DC ever decides to bring him back (which they have done on more then one occasion). But more importantly, I give a complete rundown of all the other contents in this massive book, and there is a lot to go over including revealing the other artists and writers that created a whole host of comics that have never been reprinted until now.

I also go over my initial reaction to the first 2 weeks of DC Comics New 52. In short, I’m impressed with many titles, but some left me saying, “Thanks for the #1, but no thanks to #2″. Find out what made my cut!

Every day we are getting more and more information on the DC “reboot” coming in September. Most of the titles have been announced (both officially and unofficially) as well as the creative teams. What struck me is the reintroduction of many characters for a new generation of readers such as Voodoo, Grifter, Resurrection Man, Swamp Thing, John Constantine and to a certain extent Captain Atom, Firestorm and Mr. Terrific. That got me thinking that I don’t even know a lot about these characters (or have forgotten) and that’s why I think this is a perfect opportunity for DC Comics to bring back Who’s Who series of comics to help all of us understand these “new” characters and their surroundings. I’ll say this, Marvel certainly has been the forerunner in this category for the past few years releasing periodic updates to the Marvel Handbook with a focus on the major Marvel events and the live action movies.

Also, on the show today, I go over what titles I plan on picking up (so far) and some great upcoming releases from DC Comics and Dark Horse including BPRD: Plague of Frogs HC Volume 2!!!.

The name Neal Adams has been synonymous with comic books for decades. He has spent the majority of his career with DC and in recent years they have celebrated his work with the release of Batman Illustrated Volumes 1-3, Superman Kyrptonite Nevermore, DC Universe Illustrated Volume 1 (projected to be 3 volumes) and the upcoming Superman Vs. Muhammad Ali HC (November).
Adams has worked on just about every character in the DCU including working on several War genre stories. One of those characters has been Superman and today I go over as to what could be a Superman Illustrated by Neal Adams Volume 1.

Digital Comics Review

Before I ever read a comic book, I watched TV. Like most kids in Detroit, Channel 20 was a favorite showing reruns of Johnny Socko’s Flying Robot or Ultra Man. Channel 50, on the other hand, had reruns of the 1960′s Batman. I clearly remember watching every episode and priding myself on knowing each and every character. I even tried to piece my own continuity, which looking back on it now, was a complete waste of time. But even as a kid all that really mattered was Julie Newmar and Yvonne Craig. I loved the old TV shows: Batman, Hulk, Greatest American Hero, and heck I was even turned back on to Smallville when the JSA arrived.

TwoMorrow’s has now published a complete retrospective of all the superhero television shows called The Age of TV Heroes. It’s extensively researched and written by Jason Hofius and George Khoury. The book is full of interviews and rare photographs from years gone by. Every single live-action show ever having to do with a superhero is represented, which if you think about it is quiet a feat in of itself. I showcase that book today, but if you want to get the authors perspective you can listen to the TwoMorrow’s Tune-In Podcast with Jason and George from last summer when the book was in its final stages.

I also go over some of the 2010 Eisner Nominees and C2E2.

As I stated yesterday on the CCL Blog, I was going to review the DC Comics Classics Library Justice League of America by George Perez Volume 1 (of 2). It’s a fine book; in of itself, but the more I looked at it, the more I thought that both Volumes should be collected into a book similar to that of the Neal Adams Library (Batman 1-3, DC Universe 1). Not only that but the whole program looks to be all over the spectrum: Golden Age, Silver Age, half done series, complete series, reprints of reprints, and two that should be a part of the DC Archive Editions not their own Volume One. Today I try to figure out just what DC has created and what it intends to do with this format how it compares to the Marvel counterpart and what I would do differently.

Also on the show I talk about DC books announced at the Diamond Retailer Summit including the Wednesday Comics Hardcover, Absolute Planetary Volumes 1 and 2, and other books such as DC Greatest Imaginary Stories Volume 2: Batman & Robin, Showcase Presents Suicide Squad Volume 1 and even the Blackest Night Hardcover.

As promised last week, we get back to one of the classic podcast features: When Trades Collide! Today, we look at two books from Darwyn Cooke and see how they are related story wise – Richard Stark’s Parker: The Hunter HC (IDW) and Batman: Ego and Other Tails HC (DC Comics). If you liked The Hunter then you’ll want to pick up the Batman book because Cooke did a pseudo-prototype of the Parker, named Stark, in the Selina’s Big Score GN and in the short story Déjà Vu from Solo #5. I also take a look at the most recent movie version of The Hunter, Payback – Straight Up – The Director’s Cut DVD.
