This week Marvel announced that they were canceling Alpha Flight with issue #8. This came as a surprise to many because it seemed that Marvel was committed to a long lasting ongoing rather then a mini-series here and there which had been Alpha Flight’s MO the past few years.
A few days later, Marvel released their solicitations for January 2012 and in it we can see the aforementioned #8 and the Alpha Flight by Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente Volume 1 Premiere Hardcover that will collect Alpha Flight (2011) #0.1 and #1-4, 120 pages $19.99 – an average of $4 per issue.
So now what? Will the Volume 2 Premiere Hardcover collect #5-8 for $16? Outrageous, I tell you!
Marvel should do the right thing and postpone the Volume 1 and collect the entire run in one book. 9 issues for $29.99 perhaps.
It’s not just Marvel. All comic book companies need to think long term when canceling a title while publishing the collected edition.
