Deluxe Hardcover
DC is all about the Deluxe Hardcover collected edition these days.  The upcoming Batman: The Black Glove will be 384 pages/$39.99. Under this plan we would have a 3 volume set to collect the entire series. What comics would be in which hardcover (or trade) remains to be seen. I doubt we will see the “DVD extras” that will be in the Absolute, but you will get your fair share. I think this format will be the first one we will see in 2013.

Trade Paperback
Without a doubt the most affordable route would be to buy Before Watchmen in softcover trades. DC could collect each series individually. Let’s assume that all comics will be 30 pages/$2.99. That means:

• Five 4-issue trades; 120 pages each
• Three 6-issue trades; 180 pages each
• One  Crimson Corsair/Epilogue; 100 pages (70 pages/30 pages)

Sounds great, but I doubt this will be the case. That’s just too many trades (9 total) and DC Comics is not going to charge $11.99 for a 4-issue book when you could get so much more money if you combine them. More likely is the possibility that DC will collect it like this:

• Three 10-issue trades (One 4-issue and One 6-issue); 300 pages; $29.99 each
• One 9-issue plus Crimson Corsair storyline (Two 4-issue, Crimson Corsair/Epilogue); 340 pages; $29.99

Why $29.99? Again recent DC history gives us this price point. Resurrection Man TPB is 336 pages/$29.99 so it seems like a good place to start. However, DC has also released new editions of Batman: Knightfall which is roughly 652 pages/$29.99. But that’s too much Watchmen for too small a price for brand new material.

Either way I am excited for Before Watchmen. Not all of the comics, but most.
And it has nothing to do with JMS.

There’s been several great artists and writers on Spider-Man throughout the decades. One of my all time favorites is Todd McFarlane. Back in the late 1980′s I picked up a handfull of his run on Amazing Spider-Man, but I was also one of the fanboys who bought one of the 2.5 millions copies of Spider-Man #1 in 1990 – Silver and Gold covers and all!

Come this June, Marvel will have collected all of McFarlane’s comics on Spidey, and today we take a look back on the complete body of work, the collected edition formats and even a lesson on how to read one of the hardcovers.

All-Star Batman and Robin (2005–08)
Only 10 issues have been published and the first 9 issues of Frank Miller’s Batman has been collected in both Hardcover and Trade Paperback. The series is suppose to pick up under the new title of Dark Knight: Boy Wonder, it’s unknown when the series will see the light of day.

Batman: Hush (2002–03)
The highly acclaimed Batman #608-619 has been collected in Hardcover, Trade Paperback and as an Absolute edition (2005). The oversized slipcased book includes an all-new cover by Jim Lee and Scott Williams, a Jim Lee Sketchbook, and issue-by-issue commentary by the creative team including writer Jeph Loeb. Originally published in Batman Black and White #1, To Become The Bat was written by Warren Ellis and has been collected in Batman Black and White: Volume 2 Hardcover (2002).

Superman/Batman #26 (The Boys Are Back in Town, 2-pages) (2006)
This special comic was to be the writing debut of Jeph Loeb’s son Sam. Tragically, however, Sam lost his battle with cancer at the tender young age of 17. Many creators, including Jim Lee, stepped up and gave their talents to finish Sam’s work and as it turned out created one of the best comics of the year. Sadly, #26 has not been collected in any form, but you can buy it digitally through Comixology.

• The Danish comics award, The Ping, is resurrected – The Ping in its original iteration was awarded between 1986 and 1996 and was given to an individual for his or her contribution to Danish comics. The new Ping is rather different — it’s a set of awards given in multiple categories, much like the Eisners in the US or the Fauves in Angoulême, France.
