During the Holiday’s not a whole lot of news comes out from the various comic book companies. Usually big announcements are made during the summer convention season. This is reason why I haven’t been doing a whole lot of link-blogging these past few weeks. However, there is some news that has trickled down, so in case you missed it here are a few links:
- Chris Ryall, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of IDW, announced on his Blog that IDW will publish at least 2 Omnibus editions of Marvel Star Trek run. the first will be issues 4-18 of their original series (issues 1-3 were the movie adaptation and are being collected in their own Omnibus later), complete with an all-new STAR TREK II adaptation we’re doing. The second edition will collect the entirety of their EARLY VOYAGES series. Zach Howard will be doing covers for both books.
- Valerie D’Orazio, Occasional Superheroine, digs into Batman RIP and Final Crisis and mail regarding the collected editions.
- Timothy Callahan, CBR, on his Best Of 2008: Top 20 Collected Editions. Absolute Ronin at #4? Really, Tim? and I was surprised to see Dark Tower has made any list. Sure the art is fantastic, but the hardcover fails to reprint all the prose pieces that were published in the original monthly run. This book may be my biggest disappointment of the year, not one of the best.
- In his latest column for CBR, Scott, Classic Comics Corner, reviews some must have Classic Collections For Your Bookshelf, including The Complete Classic Adventures of Zorro by Alex Toth and the just sold out Herbie Archives Volume 1 by Richard E. Hughes and Ogden Whitney.
- Going a little ways back to November 5th, Danny, 20th Century Danny Boy, takes a look at the growing number of names in the reprint credit section of new Marvel Essentials compared to the older ones . And also has some cool Iron Man artwork.
- DC Comics Unveils Book Titles For Summer 2009. Aside from Starman, nothing really intrigues me. Thanks to Charlie and ComicList.
- BOOM! hires Tony Shenton as new TPB sales representative Thanks to CBR.
- Josh and the guys from iFanboy do an excellent job on podcast Episode #101 The Gift of Comics. Then Josh goes and writes a great blog post on The Top 5 Most Wanted Out of Print Comics. Damn, guys are stealing all my thunder!
- Heidi MacDonald, The Beat, has Details on (the now delayed) You’ll All Be Sorry! collection – Gail Simone’s epochal humor column.
- Newsarams talks to Dean Mullaney on IDW’s Library of American Comics

Yes, REALLY! Absolute Ronin is brilliant. Have you read it?
And here’s how much I miss the prose pieces in the Dark Tower book: 0%. It’s all about Jae Lee’s art and visual weirdness. Anything else would just detract from that.
The Creeper Showcase has to be the smallest one DC has made. I’m surprised they just didn’t make it a color trade.
RE: Creeper Showcase.
Yeah, but it’s only $10 (296 pages). SP: Super Friends is only $10 (448 pages), too; granted those are some pretty campy stories.
Tim,
You know that I respect your opinion above so many others, so I’m glad we can agree to disagree and still remain friends.
IMO, when it comes to Collected Editions, you have to compare the end product with the monthly format. In the case of Dark Tower: LRH all comics were priced at $4 for five issues for $20 total. The HC which contained none of the prose pieces ran for $25.
There are also people who are Stephen King fans and not comic fans that come by the book from a Book Store display table, who will buy it not knowing that there are missing parts of the overall story.
Sure you may not need the prose, but it was written in for a reason, not just to chuck it when a hardcover comes out. I just think that Marvel is being hypocritical in their marketing. They have praised the series and even had midnight offerings, but when it comes selling the HC they pull back on the reigns and only offer the sequential artwork.
Prediction: When Part 3: Treachery is complete and after the regular HC comes out, Marvel will release an Omnibus collecting everything (including the prose) in one massive volume say about 2010 or so for $100. $25 above the cost of all three HC’s combined.
As for Ronin, I have the original issues, and I did get a look at the Absolute. Like other comparable books it is very nice, but it’s the price of the book that I have issue with.
If you compare it to Sandman, which made your list, I think that you get more for your money with Gaiman for the same price ($100). Not just with extras but the story, art, writing and of lastly the impact on which Sandman has made in the comic book culture. Ronin, even with Frank Miller’s name attached, has not done that. I think DC is just capitalizing on his name and not his product. IMO, Dark Knight and Daredevil, for which he is more famous for, is much more outstanding then his earlier work and can sustain a $100 price for their oversized books, but Ronin, does not. In short I just think it’s priced too high; for $75 I would be more inclined to pick it up.
Hey Chris! Just wanted to drop by and tell you that i saw a solicit for The Goon Vol 7 (apparently, Chinatown was vol 6).
