As Collected Edition enthusiasts we have our choice of formats – hardcover, softcover, digest, oversized, hell we even have digital. But what do you do if you have been collecting a certain title in a manner that fits you tastes and then the publisher switches it up on you? I’m taking about Marvel. Specifically their Premiere Hardcovers compared to their slightly over-sized Hardcovers and just how it is effecting us Punisher fan-boys. The current (and brilliant) series, by Rick Remender, has put forth two PH’s but now Volume 3 will be the over-sized Franken-Castle storyline. Buyers of this Punisher book will have an incoherent shelf when it arrives on November 17 and if Marvel is consistent with past protocol, they will not release this Hardcover as a Premiere edition, but will break it up into two Trade Paperbacks sometime in 2011. I’ll explore this today to find out what if is fair and acceptable to us Hardcover buyers. I also take a look at the renumbering and renaming of Punisher and if those changes can have an adverse effect.

  1. I am glad to here someone else is fed up with all this name changing in the Punisher . I pretty much have only read the Garth Ennis Punisher stuff but was too confused to risk jumping into the other editions. I think I will check out the war Journal but the idea of a Frankenstein Punisher doesnt appeal to me at all.
While I am joining in with your rant I also got burned by a few Origins titles of other big Franchises like Spawn and The Darkness. I ordered them thinking they were some sort of prequel but found they were simply reprints of earlier issues that I already have. You really have to do your research in the collected editions world.

    1. First and foremost I’m a Punisher fan. Secondly, I love the old Universal Monster movies (The Mummy is my favorite, while Frankenstein is a close second). I also like Rick Remender’s work on Fear Agent, so for me it all works and I’ve enjoyed the over the top take on Frank. But as I stated in the show, the title change is a bit troubling for me.Yes, I think to many times people order too quickly and don’t take their time to double check what they are buying.
For example, I just picked up the Moon Knight Countdown to Dark Hardcover. I didn’t think I owned these individual issues so that’s why I bought it. Come to find out I do own these as the Moon Knight Special Edition comic books from the late 80′s/90′s! I should have done my homework.

  3. Great show, Chris. I, too have enjoyed the FrankenCastle arc. But as to the renumbering dilemma – it seems to me that the publishers don’t even care about these numbering schemes anymore. It sure looks like their prevailing “wisdom” is to do smaller, limited series that can be easily collected instead of preserving a long-term numbered book.
