On Tuesday a 3rd grader brought a fully loaded semi-automatic handgun to my son’s school. At recess he showed it off on the playground and other kids promptly told the teachers. The boy ran inside and hid the gun in a pencil box in his desk. He was caught very quickly, tragedy was averted and no one got hurt. Incidentally my 10-year-old son, Patrick, was near by on the basketball court when all this went down. Today on the show I talk about this very scary situation, what is being done and what I am doing as a parent. This topic doesn’t really have to do anything with comics, but it in the past 24 hours it has made me realize that perhaps there is too much violence in my household. This includes video games, movies and my comic book collection – specifically my near complete run of everything Punisher. I don’t have the answers nor do I want to come across like I’m preaching. It’s just that it hit very close to home yesterday and I need to get some things off my chest including what positive steps I can do on my part.

All this including the New Releases of the Week.

24 is over the top violence on tv but then again it is for older teens & adults. As for the school situation, what about zero tolerance on guns policy at the school. Guns have a place in society for protection (of people who are 18+ & had proper gun safety training) of the individual & others. Parents have to be proactive & so does the school on the issue. As for comics & violence, you have to use your best judgment of what is appropriate for a kid who is 10 years ie Uncle Scrooge not Vertigo Fables or Marvel kid digests not Punisher Max.

Thx Matthew. Our district does have a zero tolerance on guns policy. I’m sure every district in the country has one ever since Columbine. It looks like the child will be expelled for at least 90 school days starting in September when we start a new year. Then father is probably gong to get prosecuted, too, for having an unregistered hand gun. I’m willing to bet the family will move to another district. I’ll keep you and everyone informed.

I heard about this episode over on the 11 o’clock podcast. I also like to listen to your show. I’m sorry to hear about what happened at your son’s school. I support what you are doing in your household and I hope your community will do the same thing. Keep violent media out of kids hands and lets kids be kids. People really need to keep their firearms in a locked gun cabinet or have a trigger lock. Is that much to ask with kids around. The kid who went to the teacher should be rewarded somehow. Give her/him an ipad or something. I have a 3 year old daughter at home and feel like I can’t even watch the news when she’s around. I’ve taken to listening to the radio more to get my news.

I’d blame the parents in this case, the parents are supposed to keep guns in a safe where kids cannot get access to them. They do make gun safes for this purpose, where it uses fingerprint recognition so that only the gun owner can open it.
