As I stated yesterday on the CCL Blog, I was going to review the DC Comics Classics Library Justice League of America by George Perez Volume 1 (of 2). It’s a fine book; in of itself, but the more I looked at it, the more I thought that both Volumes should be collected into a book similar to that of the Neal Adams Library (Batman 1-3, DC Universe 1). Not only that but the whole program looks to be all over the spectrum: Golden Age, Silver Age, half done series, complete series, reprints of reprints, and two that should be a part of the DC Archive Editions not their own Volume One. Today I try to figure out just what DC has created and what it intends to do with this format how it compares to the Marvel counterpart and what I would do differently.

Also on the show I talk about DC books announced at the Diamond Retailer Summit including the Wednesday Comics Hardcover, Absolute Planetary Volumes 1 and 2, and other books such as DC Greatest Imaginary Stories Volume 2: Batman & Robin, Showcase Presents Suicide Squad Volume 1 and even the Blackest Night Hardcover.

All this and the New Releases of the Week.

Though I agree with you, for the most part, that DC is going down the wrong path a bit with the Library line, I would like to comment a bit on some things you said on the show.

You commented that the Flash of Two Worlds book was a mistake because it had been reprinted so much. You can’t tell me that Wolverine Origin wasn’t also a mistake then.

You made a comment to the effect that the Kryptonite No More storyline was perfectly done. While I loved the book and they were stories I hadn’t read before, only the first story in the book truly had much to do with the removal of Kryptonite. Everything after that felt like pages they needed to fill the book. Again, I loved being able to read those stories that have (as far as I know) never been reprinted, but I would disagree that that book was perfect.

The problem, as I see it, when comparing Marvel’s and DC’s respective lines is that each company has handled stories completely differently over the years. Marvel has always had running sub-plots, and those lend themselves to being collected. DC has always tended toward done-in-one stories, and that makes “themed” collections, like Flash of Two-Worlds, more likely.

    Thanks for another great episode!

Oh, by the way, I completely agree that the Perez JLA book should have been done like the Neal Adams book. DC absolutely missed the boat on that one.
