For the past few years I’ve told you how much I’ve been enjoying Marvel Cosmic. From Annihilation and Nova to Guardians of the Galaxy and the current War Of Kings storyline, it’s some of the best comic books in the business. In fact, DC is doing a bang up job with Green Lantern side of things, too, but we’ll save that for another podcast. Last April I had caught up with everything that was going on in the vastness of the literal extended Marvel universe and wanted more, so I decided to pick up The Essential Nova Volume 1. There’s no doubt that there is a lot to this book, but there is a lot missing as well and there’s enough blame to go around starting with the original series from 1976 all the way to 2006 when this collected edition was constructed. And to paraphrase a certain ‘toon: it’s not Nova’s fault, he’s just created that way.
Also on the show, The Harvey Awards Nominees were announced and I go over a few categories as they pertain to this podcast and blog, Howard Chaykin and Dynamite Entertainment team up for some long awaited reprint books and the hot selling Comic Book Podcast Companion.
All this and the New Releases of the Week.

What timing!!! I just actually finished reading Essential Nova last night. This had been on my bookshelf for a year or so, and finally decided back earlier in June to pull it down and read it.
The book is definitely a product of it’s era. Doesn’t hold up well over time. Thankfully, Nova and the other characters Marvel created in the mid- to late-1970s, such as Spider-Woman, She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel, have been re-imagined in current continuity as much more fascinating characters.
I also have personal issues with the art style of Carmine Infantino. I just have never cared for this style, and as his career progressed, his characters seemed to lean more and more to the right or left. But I committed myself to finishing the book!
I do agree it would have been nice to add the FF issues to complete the storyarc, which the reader could piece together by reading the Handbook entries at the end of the book.
As always, Chris, thank you for the work you put into the podcast each week.

Jerry,
Glad I can be of service.
The
oldClassic stories of the 1970′s are tough to get through be it the writing or the art and with no color in the Essential, it’s makes it even more difficult. And thanks so much for listening to the Podcast. Kind comments make it all worth while.
