It’s time once again for my annual Adopt a Character show. You are welcome to play along, it very easy and fun to do. Simply pick a character that you have always wanted to know more about and go out and do it! You have a full year to get acquainted with the character (or team) by reading as much you can. You may recall in 2007 I chose Thor and in 2008 I went with Luke Cage (with a bit of Iron Fist thrown in). For 2009 I’m going with Will Eisner’s The Spirit. I’ve been collecting the entire run of the Archive series from DC but I never really got around to reading it in its entirety; I now have a valid excuse to do so. I’m already through 4 volumes and I hope to read one book a week. Speaking of this series, there is news that Volume 26 (which was due December 31, 2008) has been delayed until June. This is problematic because Volume 27 (from Dark Horse) is due in April. You can rest assured that I dive head first in to that!
Also on the show, I give the lowdown on some great upcoming reference books and collected editions including Star Trek: A Comics History (Hermes Press), Humbug HC (Fantagraphics), Melvin Monster (John Stanley Library/Drawn and Quarterly), and a number of upcoming books from TwoMorrows Publishing one of which is I am proud to be a part of: The Comic Book Podcast Companion by: Eric Houston.
All this and the New Releases of the Week.
Chris

Previews’ website does currently have the Shipping Updates in the left column. They may have only updated it after your recording.
Keep up the great work!
Joseph,
Thx. I see it now. Looks like Diamond did a bit of a redesign, too.
A great biography of Will Eisner is “A Spirited Life” by Bob Andelman, published by Dark Horse. I went to his panel at the 2006 MegaCon in Orlando and finally bought it the next year. It gives a good overview of Eisner’s varied career and full life.
I’ve decided to follow your lead, and am myself adopting a character for 2009: the Legion of Super-Heroes. I have done my best to avoid them for nearly my entire 30 years of reading comics, so there is plenty for me to dive into. I have the first 2 Showcase LSH books in my To Be Read pile, with Vol 3 in the new Previews, IIRC. A buddy of mine has a long run at his house, so I may take a short box or two over and borrow quite liberally from him over this upcoming year. And as a bonus treat, I have last night’s ‘Smallville’ on my DVR to watch.
I have been inspired to try reading Conan the Barbarian as my adopted character for the year. I have seen the cheezy movies but never read any of the comic books so I thought Conan would make a good choice. Keep up the good work on the podcasts.
