BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS’ recent series FATALE and The FADE OUT have brought their work to a wider audience of new readers, and now is the perfect time to show them the work that made the award-winning team’s reputation! “Brubaker and Phillips’ books have always been about eight years ahead of their time.” —Brian K. Vaughan
Looks like Brubaker and Phillips are serious. Not only with new Criminal material in standard and oversized formats, but with new reprints, too. You’ll recall that Marvel/Icon released the entire series in 6 trade paperbacks from 2007-2011 and two Deluxe Editions in 2009 and 2012 that included essays, cover galleries, process pieces and several other extras. It looks as though, for now, Image is just releasing the trades. No word on a Deluxe Edition, but I’ll bet money that one will get published eventually.
Marvel has released their January 2015 solicits, but the only one book I want to focus on is the Avengers: The Vibranuim Collection Slipcase HC. Ths massive collected edition follows the footsteps of Wolverine: The Adamantium Collection from 2013 that came out just in time for The Wolverine movie. This book, to no one’s surprise, is being released in time for Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron and again to no one’s surprise features the aforementioned villain.
Let’s take a look at the original solicit:

ORION BY WALTER SIMONSON OMNIBUS EDITION HC Written by WALTER SIMONSON and others Art by WALTER SIMONSON, FRANK MILLER, JIM LEE and others Cover by WALTER SIMONSON On sale MARCH 25 • 688 pg, FC, $75.00 US Legendary writer/artist Walter Simonson takes on Jack Kirby’s Fourth World! These tales star the heroes and villains of the Fourth World as Darkseid seeks the Anti-Life Equation and Orion battles to stop him! Collects ORION #1-25 and stories from JACK KIRBY’S FOURTH WORLD #9-11 and 13!
I’ve been waiting for this book ever since DC was publishing the 4-Volume Jack Kirby Fourth Word Omnibus Hardcovers. Simonson does a great homage to Kiby and in several instances takes it a few steps further. Make no mistake, this series isn’t exactly easy to find in back-issue bins, so if you want it, this is a great chance to add to the complete the Fourth World Epic.
SECRET SIX VOL. 1: VILLAINS UNITED TP Written by GAIL SIMONE Art by BRAD WALKER, JIMMY PALMIOTTI, DALE EAGLESHAM and others Cover by J.G. JONES On sale FEBRUARY 11 • 328 pg, FC, $19.99 US Collecting the stories that led into INFINITE CRISIS from VILLAINS UNITED #1-6, the SECRET SIX 6-issue miniseries and VILLAINS UNITED: INFINITE CRISIS SPECIAL #1! Six of justice’s deadliest enemies have banded together to keep the super-heroic community from tampering with their minds – and to show just how deadly they can be!
If you never got around to reading Secret Six, here’s your chance. I was buying these when they were coming out a few years ago and I loved every issue and how the characters interacted with each other. This, and future volumes are must buys!
Finally, we have one from the Vertigo solictis:
OCEAN/ORBITER DELUXE EDITION HC Written by WARREN ELLIS Art by COLLEEN DORAN, CHRIS SPROUSE and KARL STORY Cover TBD On sale MARCH 18 • 264 pg, FC, 7.0625” x 10.875” $29.99 US • MATURE READERS Two classic science fiction epics written by Warren Ellis are collected together for the first time! In OCEAN #1-6, U.N. weapons inspector Nathan Kane must learn what lies under Europa’s half-mile-thick mantle of ice. And in the original graphic novel ORBITER, a long-missing space shuttle crash lands on Earth to unlock a mystery that will unfold deep in outer space.
Although these stories are not related to each another (or are they?) they are two of Warren Ellis’s finer sci-fi tales. FYI, Obiter from 2003 is an original graphic novel, while Ocean is a 6-issue series from 2004.
Dark Horse has released their January 2015 solicitations — man, I can’t believe we are halfway through this decade! Let’s a take a look at a few notable classic collected editions:
Adventures into the Unknown Archives Volume 4 HC
On sale Mar 18
FC, 216 pages
HC, 7″ x 10″
A classic cover by Ogden Whitney sets the tone for our fourth excursion into the quirky realms found in Adventures into the Unknown! Classic monsters, convoluted crises, and ghosts of all sorts populate these entertaining Golden Age gems. Featuring a new foreword by comic-book historian and Mr. Monster creator Michael T. Gilbert! Collect issues #13-#16.
• Foreword by Michael T. Gilbert!
• Featuring work by Ogden Whitney!
I was afraid that Dark Horse was going to drop this series, after all Volume 3 was released in September 2013, but it looks to be back on track. Let’s just hope we get these books released a little more frequently.
Archie’s Pal Jughead Archives Volume 1 HC
Samm Schwartz (A), George Frese (A), and Joe Edwards (A)
On sale Mar 25
FC, 232 pages
HC, 7″ x 10″
You know Jughead as Archie’s loyal sidekick, but wait until you see the trouble he can get up to on his own! Cheer as Jug matches wits with Archie’s rival Reggie, gasp as he tests nutty experiments with his Uncle Herman, and marvel as he eats dozens upon dozens of burgers and shakes! With twice the mischief, twice the pranks, and twenty times the food, Jughead Archives takes you to the weirder side of Riverdale, in this uproarious volume illustrated by beloved Archie artists Samm Schwartz and George Frese! Collects Jughead #1–#8 from 1949 to 1950.
I have yet to get any of the Archie Archives (currently on Volume 10), but I may start up now with Jughead Volume 1. Samm Schartz, not only pencilled, inked, and lettered Jughead but did so though the 1960’s and even even did work on the comic in then 1980’s, making Jughead is own alter-ego. Any hey, any book that dons argyle on the cover is worth buying.
The Chronicles of Conan Volume 29: The Shape in the Shadow and Other Stories TP
On sale Mar 11
FC, 224 pages
TP, 7″ x 10″
To pay his debts, Conan comes into the employ of an exiled prince who needs the barbarian’s strength and skills to reclaim his royal heritage, the Eye of Bast, a priceless jewel with a deadly secret! Plus: Marvel Comics’ origin of Conan the Barbarian! Collects Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian #224–#232.
• All stories collected for the first time!
What? The origin of Conan? Yes, it took place starting with “Young Conan” in #232 as a 9-part story. I’m dumbfounded as to why Dark Horse wouldn’t collect it all as one oversized book for Volume 30.
DC Comics may have put themselves into some hot water as of late, but they still manage to put out some decent classic collected editions.
Take for example Batman ’66: The TV stories. No doubt capitalizing on the current “revival” of sorts from Jeff Parker, these comics from BATMAN #53, 73, 121, 140, 169 and 171, and DETECTIVE COMICS #230, 346 and 359 were adapted into the TV show. We can only hope that the classic Adam West and Burt Ward campy adventures will be properly released someday.
Next up is The Demon: From The Darkness by Matt Wagner. This trade collects the 4-issue miniseries form 1987 and Wagner’s follow up Demon #22 from 1990. If you are a fan of Wagner then this will go nicely next to your Grendel Omnibus collection. Perhaps this will encourage DC to publish a complete Batman: Dark Moon Rising hardcover.
John’s Byrne’s epic continues in Superman: The Man Of Steel Volume 8. In this installment we get ACTION COMICS #598-600, SUPERMAN #16-18 and ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #439-440. You would think that this run would one day get the hardcover omnibus treatment – at least that’s what I’m holding out for.
Green Lantern: Sector 2814 Volume 3 has me a bit stumped. I thought this trade paperback series was only collecting Dave Gibbon’s Green Lantern run, but it looks like it’s the Life and Times of Green Lantern Jon Stewart. I just wonder how many volumes this will go?
