TwoMorrows Tune-In Gary Owens Special

TwoMorrows Tune-In Gary Owens Special (MP3)
Welcome to a Special Interview TwoMorrows Tune-In Podcast. Today on the show, host Chris Marshall presents an in-depth conversation between Back Issue writer Richard A. Scott and voice talent extraordinaire Gary Owens (Space Ghost, Laugh-In). Most of the interviews that are conducted for our various magazine and publications are done over the phone. This is a real treat because not only does Owens talk about his long career and also has some funny and interesting stories involving many of his famous Hollywood and Animation friends but he also a does a few of his voices along the way. You can read the full interview in Back Issue #30 – our Saturday Morning Heroes Special – it is on sale now. Thanks goes out to Richard A. Scott and Gary Owens for allowing me to air the interview and special thanks to John Morrow and Editor Michael Eury.

For the past few weeks you’ve listened to me go on and on about the Marvel Illustrated books: Who is the core audience? How well do they sell? Why publish them in the first place? Today we get right to the heart of the matter in an interview with comic Legend and Writer of the series, Roy Thomas. I had a wonderful time in talking with Roy and he is very candid and really opens up about the project.
As far as the rest of the show goes, I talk about the new Watchmen (no, not the trailer) Motion Comic on iTunes, what’s happening with the TwoMorrows Publishing, the Tune-In Podcast and San Diego, and my neighbors’ Steve podcast, Airspeed.
No, I have not seen The Dark Knight, yet.

This week marks a special week in the world of comic books and podcasting, along with several other shows, the CCL is covering Diamond Distribution and the Direct Market. All of the participating podcasts are focusing on this one very important and often understood (or misrepresented) company and system. For my part, I went on location to Detroit Comics and sat down with owner Brian Kelly to talk about what it takes to open a new comic book store including the good and bad and his relationship with Diamond. I want to thank Brian for being so candid in his assessment. I found it to be insightful, straight forward and honest. To find a listing of all the other shows and their exact take, please visit our unofficial host, Comics Related.
Also in this week’s installment, I give a quick rundown of some books scheduled to be coming out in August and throughout the 4th Quarter and even some DC Comics Collected Editions for 2009 which includes a Deluxe Hardcover of Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing.
Lastly, I want to congratulate Jeffery Grill of Miami, FL who won the Annihilation Conquest Book 1 giveaway contest. My oversight is his advantage. All this and the New Releases of the Week.

Today for the podcast I have a really fun and very informative interview with Todd DePastino author of Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front and editor for Willie and Joe: The World War II Years (Fantagraphics). For decades Mauldin had been the voice of the Greatest Generation through his cartoons particularly with his most famous characters Willie and Joe. Todd and I go in-depth with both the biography and the upcoming cartoon collected edition.

Also in the show I cover a bit of news that I blogged about this past week including Shazam!, American Flagg and Carl Barks and Donald Duck. All this and new sponsor to the podcast, the Library Binding Company, the best place to get all those loose monthly comics bound into a nice hardcover.

Collected Comics Library Podcast #153

Think of the show today as and extension of the Around Comics Alex Ross interview that was released on New Years Eve. As I state in the show, I was to do a little rundown of all things collected that involves Ross. As you can guess the segment ran a bit too long, so I’m expanding it even further and using it as today’s feature. As you know, Ross has done just about as many major projects as you have fingers, and I’m betting that you can name them all. But as for his Collected Editions, what are all the extras? Today we take a look at a few books, like The Absolute Kingdom Come, The World’s Greatest Super Heroes Slipcase (a precursor to the Absolute line), Mythology, Marvels and the Earth X Hardcover Book Package. A big time artist with a lot of big books.
Also on the show today, I go over a few couple of conventions coming to the Detroit area. First up is the The American Comic Book - A Detroit Perspective - An Exhibit of Comic Book Art and Paintings by Detroit Area Artists on January 19 - February 16, 2008 and then the Motor-City Comic Con on May 16-18, 2008. I’ll be attending both.
Other than that, the news has been slow and the Release List is smaller than usual. No surprise in either case.
