Comic Book Blog browsing on a Sunday night
Like most of the country, it’s absolutely freezing outside and there is absolutely nothing to watch on TV. So that’s why I’m Blogging on a Sunday night. After I post this I plan on working on the Website and read a bit more of my Essential Luke Cage Volume 1. Dig It! On with tonight’s links:
- Are you picking up The Complete Peanuts from Fantagraphics? Then you may recognize the artwork from this weeks New Yorker Magazine. It’s done by the artist Seth, who does the cover designs for Peanuts.
- The Marvel Masterworks Website is reporting that Uncanny X-Men Masterworks Volume 6 is scheduled to be released February 20. I noticed that Marvel Masterworks: Ant-Man/Giant-Man Vol. 2 HC (Variant Vol. 91) is due out that day, too. No word on if that book will get pushed back, but I’m guess it will. to my recollection, I’ve never seen two Masterworks come out in the same day. Also, Marvel Masterworks: Thor Volume 7 (Variant Volume 96) is due out in May. That book will collect Thor #153-162, 224 pages and have an introduction by comic book historian, Arlen Schumer (The Silver Age of Comic Book Art).
- The Complete Sam & Max collection Surfin’ the Highway, by Steve Purcell and Telltale, is back in print. In addition to all of the content of the 1995 original, the new edition contains 25 pages of content developed over the last two decades, bringing the page count to 197 with 45 pages in full color. The collection is available in two versions: a paperback edition, and a limited edition hardcover. Both versions are available now for pre-order purchase. The paperback will start shipping on February 25, and the hardcover is scheduled for a Spring 2008 release.
- Alan Gardner, Daily Cartoonist, reports on some upcoming daily strip collections coming out including Garfield, Zits!, For Better or For Worse and one of my current favorites, Pearls Before Swine
- More Digital Goodness: Gordon McAlpin, Comixtalk, gives some publicity to the free, yes free, first issue of the Multiplex eBook collection. It’s 36 pages long, and it collects Multiplex #1-24 plus a couple of guest strips by McAlpin, himself. Nice way to plug your book, eh? Remember free is good so go check it out.
- Review: Collected Editions Blog, on Green Lantern Corps: The Dark Side TPB. I have to be honest, I have not picked up Sinestro Corp yet. I’m waiting for the Hardcovers to come out. I think I may be this book up (and Recharge, too) to get me ready for the War.

CCL Podcast #155 - Adopt a Character for 2008
Collected Comics Library Podcast #155
20,371Kb; 21m 27s
As I did last year at this time, it’s time once again for Adopt a Character. Like I say in the show, I did terrible job in 2007 with Thor. I hope to fair better in 2008 with Luke Cage, with a little help from his friend Iron Fist. I go over both characters, but only very briefly, touching upon only the main series that they starred in. I don’t go in-depth into their history or background. That’s because there is no real reason to. Half the fun of adopting a character of your own is delving into the history and current state of the character in his or her respective universe (whatever that may be) of today. I recommend picking a character that you know little or next to nothing about but have always been a bit curious to know more. I explain it more in the show and then you can go to the Forum and play along throughout the year, where we have a nice support group to keep you going. Lord only knows I need one.
Not much in the way of news, except a new Marvel Masterworks: Captain Marvel Volume 3 (Variant 95) which will collect Captain Marvel #22-33 and Iron Man #55 and is due out in April. Also mentioned is that Daredevil Omnibus by Brian Michael Bendis which I blogged about on Monday.
Al this and the New Releases of the Week.

CCL Podcast #147 - GA and SA Aquaman
Collected Comics Library Podcast #147
29,777Kb; 31m 29s
Happy Thanksgiving! While it may be a nice long relaxing weekend for you, it will be the exact opposite for me. Besides hosting 25 people for Lions football and dinner (yes, in that order) on Thursday, my sister is getting married on Saturday, which means that I also have to go to the rehearsal dinner Friday night. By Sunday, I’m the one who is going to feel like a stuffed turkey.
To start off, I talk about my involvement int he HERO for the Holidays Initiative, which I hope that all of you will support.
For the feature today, I discuss Aquaman (both Golden Age and Silver Age ) and the passing of his creator, Paul Norris. And you won’t want to miss my rant on Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane #12 , which is included in the Aquaman Showcase.
In other news, both DC and Marvel have released their solicitations and I hope to get those up on the New Releases page sometime this weekend. Also, I go over Marvel’s DCU program and I answer a Masterworks/Omnibus e-mail question.

Comic Book Blog browsing on a Friday afternoon
Lot’s on my plate this weekend. Patty and I are going to try to take the kids ice skating Saturday and then we have to drop them off at the grand parents home so we can go to some sort of neighborhood bowling/ beer league. On Sunday, I’m sure we have something going on and in between it all I have to get some football in and try to read half of the Fourth World Omnibus Volume 2. Did I mention today, Friday, I’m updating the entire site?; from Books, Checklists and the Release Schedule (including the DVDs). Next weeks I plan on being even more busy with projects that will benefit everyone that comes to the CCL. On to today’s links:
- A couple of new Star Wars books are coming out in 2008: Star Wars Blueprints: The Ultimate Collection (Fall) and Master of Deception, book nine of the Last of the Jedi series (February)
- Random House has acquired world English rights to four Iron Man book titles; two of which will tie in directly with the Iron Man movie, the other two will be original Iron Man novels, which will release after the movie
- On the heels of yesterdays Masterwork news, Marvel by way of their Marvel Masterworks website, has announced Atlas Era - Heroes Volume 2 Featuring Human Torch, Captain America and Sub-Mariner (Variant Volume 92). It will collect Men’s Adventures #27-28, Captain America #76-78 and Human Torch #36-38 and be released February 28, 2008. Looks like Cap lives after all
- Collected Editions Blog speculates about the newly announced Starman: The Complete Saga. I agree with everything, but I’d like to see an eight volume set and not four (or two!)
- What’s Bob Greenberger up to?
- Heidi MacDonald blogs about the many hardcovers and collected editions to make this week’s comics bestsellers on Amazon
- Review: Dave Wallace, Silver Bullet Comics on Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Volume One: The Long Way Home (Dark Horse)
- Review: Rack Raids on Heroes HC (DC/Wildstorm)
- Review: Tom Spurgeon on Popeye Vol. Two: “Well Blow Me Down!” (Fantagraphics)
- Review: Joe “Jog” McCulloch on Tarzan: The Joe Kubert Years Volumes 1-2 (Dark Horse Archives). Look for my comment at the end
Comic Book Blog browsing on a Thursday afternoon
So if you guys recall a few weeks ago I mentioned a brand new Marvel Masterworks and that it was going to be BIG! Well, the beans can now be spilled..As announced by Marvel by way of their Marvel Masterworks website, it is Ant Man/Giant Man Volume 2 (Variant Volume 91). I’ll add more info as it comes out through Marvel. I told you it would be BIG. On with some links:
- The 2008 Motor_City Comic Con has been announced for May 16-18. So far the featured guest will be Arthur Suydam (Marvel Zombies). I’ll be posting and talking about this more in the upcoming months.
- Even SpongeBob is effected by the writers strike and it looks really, really ugly.
- My son Patrick, isn’t that much into Lego as I thought he would be (like I was when I was his age). Looks like I won’t have to get him a subscription to the new Lego Magazine BrickJournal from TwoMorrows.. And right now you can even get a free copy of the first issue in PDF form! I’ll download a copy and see if I can gett him into it.
- Gearing up for what seems to be the Year of Speed Racer, no less than three publishers will be getting involved in the windfall. Among the material coming out will be a ton of older books that will be getting reprinted for the US market for the very first time!
- Lastly, there has been a lot of discussion (and speculation) on various message boards on upcoming Showcase Presents. Here are some of them, I’ll add more information as warranted.
- Showcase Presents: Phantom Stranger Volume 2
- Showcase Presents: Booster Gold Volume 1
- Showcase Presents: Challengers of the Unknown 2
- Showcase Presents: Legion of Super Heroes Volume 2
- Showcase Presents: Haunted Tank Volume 2
- Showcase Presents: Green Lantern Volume 3
- Showcase Presents: Flash Volume 2
- Showcase Presents: Batman Volume 3
- Showcase Presents: Challengers Volume 2
- Showcase Presents: House of Secrets Volume 1
- Showcase Presents: Hawkman Volume 2
CCL Podcast #143 - (Not So) Spooky Halloween
Collected Comics Library Podcast #143
19,704Kb; 20m 45s
Not exactly the Spooky Halloween episode that I planned. I was to have Chris Ryall, IDW Editor, on my podcast to chat about 30 Days of Night and Beowulf, but thanks to the fires in San Diego, we have to reschedule. We are going to shoot for next week. I wanted to have him on this week while the movie is doing well and to discuss the Complete 30 Days of Night Trilogy Hardcover due out in a few days.
Chris let me know that he is doing fine, and in our e-mails he did have this to say:
Hey, Chris, can we do the call next week? I’m not going to be at the office long today due to concerns over the wildfires that are getting a bit too close for comfort now.
and…
Cool, thanks, man. It’s weird here–the air is all orange and filled with ash. It’s done wonders for freeway driving near me, though… as long as the fires don’t come any closer.
and…
…probably nothing I’ll be able to do today, actually. The fires have really thrown this week into whack, but at least so far, it isn’t getting any closer to us.
Freaky to say the least. Other then no interview I did manage to piece together everything else and do some rerecording of what I had planned. This will be my last podcast for October, but I’ll still be Blogging. See you next month.

CCL Podcast #125 - M.A.R.S. Patrol Archives and Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. Masterworks

Collected Comics Library Podcast #125
25,848Kb; 27m 18s
Sort of a milestone episode this week, as I produce show number 125! But really, it’s not a big deal. What is big, is that I finally got around to watching Spider-Man 3. I really enjoyed it and I share some thoughts on the subject.
I also do a double feature this week focusing on Wally Wood’s short lived series M.A.R.S. Patrol Total War and give a Marvel Masterworks history lesson on Nick Fury and his lack of one. But that’s all about to change this September.
All this, plus news of EC’s Frontline Combat Archives Vol. 1 for 2008 and the New Releases of the Week.
