3 Collected Editions That Got Makeovers in DC’s November 2014 Solicts

ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW BY KEVIN SMITH HC
ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW BY KEVIN SMITH HC

DC Comics has released their November 2014 Solicitations and it looks as though some of the contents and format for a few of them have been changed:

Well, well, DC has finally solicited Keven Smith’s Green Arrow. It was to be a Deluxe Edition Hardcover, but now for whatever reason it’s an Absolute. I’ve said it before on the podcast, I like Smith, just not his ventures into comic book writing. That said, I may give this another shot – just because of the great art from Phil Hester and Ande Parks. Collecting GREEN ARROW #1-15, 400 pages, $99.99. Oh, and just when do you think Smith will make his cameo on Arrow?

The Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Volume 1 is another book that had a minor redo. It seems as though DC forgot to include Green Lantern Corps #14-18 and instead solicited #1-5. Probably just a typo, so it’s no big deal for me. Collects GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH #1-6, GREEN LANTERN CORPS: RECHARGE #1-5, GREEN LANTERN #1-25, GREEN LANTERN CORPS #14-18, TALES OF THE SINESTRO CORPS: SUPERMAN PRIME #1, GREEN LANTERN CORPS SINESTRO SPECIAL #1, GREEN LANTERN SECRET FILES 2005 #1 and GREEN LANTERN/SINESTRO CORPS SECRET FILES #1, 1,232 pages, $125.00.

Nightwing Vol. 1: Bludhaven TP, collects the 4-issue miniseries and issues #1-8 of his solo series form the 1990′s. It’s high time DC got to reissuing this series, but this book is missing the Nightwing: Alfred’s Return one-shot, which was originally collected in NIghtwing: Ties That Bind along with the 4-issue mini – so I’m not sure what DC is doing here. To that end, #1-8 was collected in the trade Nightwing: A Knight In Bludhaven, which now adds more confusion with the two similar titles.

4 Collection Editions To Buy from Marvel’s 2014 Solicits

WOLVERINE EPIC COLLECTION: MADRIPOOR NIGHTS TPB
WOLVERINE EPIC COLLECTION: MADRIPOOR NIGHTS TPB
Marvel has released their November 2014 Solicitations and I’m eager to own several of them:

First up Wolverine Epic Collection: Madripoor Nights, collecting WOLVERINE (1988) #1-16, and material from MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS (1988) #1-10 and MARVEL AGE ANNUAL #4, 504 pages, $34.99. While this isn’t my first exposure to Wolverine (the first was Frank Miller’s series), this is where I became 100% hooked on the character. You can think of this collection as a direct sequel to the Wolverine Omnibus, which is in desperate need of a second printing or an Epic Collection, itself. Which in that case would be Volume 0, ’cause this is Volume 1 in the series.

Marvel Masterworks: The Submariner Volume 6 (Variant Volume 215), collecting SUB-MARINER (1968) #39-49 and DAREDEVIL (1964) #77, 280 pages, $75.00. As you may know by listening to the CCL Podcast, Namor is my character to follow in 2014, that is to say that I have gone back and read his appearances in the Atlas Era Masterworks and the Silver Age run in hardcover form. This latest book will be a very nice addition to the bookshelf and I’ll probably read the whole thing with it comes in the mail from DCBS. BTW, This series ran until issue #72, so that means 3 more Masterworks for completion. Namor was next seen in Super-Villain Team-Up with Doctor Doom, which was collected in its own Essential.

Marvel Firsts: The 1980s Vol. 3 TPB is full of great #1s and First Appearances, including Steve Ditko’s Speedball and the often overlooked Havok & Wolverine: Meltdown, which perhaps should have been included in the above Epic Collection. Collecting THE ’NAM #1, COMET MAN #1, FALLEN ANGELS #1, MEPHISTO VS. #1, MARVEL GRAPHIC NOVEL #31, SPELLBOUND (1988) #1, EXCALIBUR SPECIAL EDITION, X-TERMINATORS #1, HAVOK & WOLVERINE: MELTDOWN #1, SHADOWMASTERS #1 — plus material from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #22; MARVEL AGE ANNUAL #4; and MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS (1988) #10, #17, #25-26, #29 and #38, 480 pages, $39.99.

The Howard The Duck Omnibus, collecting Adventure into Fear #19; Man-Thing #1; Giant-Size Man-Thing #4-5; Howard the Duck #1-33, Annual #1; Marvel Treasury Edition #12; Marvel Team-Up #96, 808 pages, $99.99 is one that I already own but I have to mention it because everyone should own a copy. Funny story: After my son and I saw Guardians Of The Galaxy, Patrick asked about this Omnibus and if he could read it.. Although it does contain some “adult” martial, he’s 14 and I think he can handle it. While skimming it over I could hear him laughing in the next room and so far he’s taken right to it. It now resides next to his bedside.

All The Recored 2014 Comic Con Panels That I Know Of

Comic Con International
Comic Con International

There’s a gazillion panels at Comic Con and there is absolutely no way that you could hit every one. That is, of course, if they are recored and listened back to later. Such is the case from Jamie Coville, who year after year does this arduous task for us — including a wonderful audio recording of the 2014 Eisner Awards.

Friend and fellow podcaster John Mayo, of the Comic Book Page podcast and blog and Comic Book Resources, was on this year’s 9th Annual All-Star Comic Book Podcasters Panel. It was a star-studded event and no one had a shortage of opinion. Which is as it should be. Besides the talents of John there was, Heath Corson (The Nerdist Writers Panel-Comics Edition), Calvin Reid (Publisher’s Weekly Comics World), Tim Beyers (The Motley Fool), and Glen Weldon (NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour) and moderated by another long time friend, John Siuntres (Word Balloon). I was on the 2006 Comics Podcasting Panel, perhaps I’ll make it back for the 10th Anniversary.
