TwoMorrows Tune-In #30: Danny Fingeroth, Stan Lee Universe and Comic Con 2010 (.mp3)

This month on the show, host Chris Marshall sits down with Danny Fingeroth to talk about the upcoming book The Stan Lee Universe. Danny and Roy Thomas (Alter Ego) have put together one of the most complete and personal looks at one of Comicdoms most famous figure. Here is the official solicit:

Face front, true believers! The Stan Lee Universe is the ultimate repository of interviews with and mementos about Marvel Comics’ fearless leader! From his Soapbox to the box office, the Smilin’ One literally changed the face of comic books and pop culture, and this tome presents in his own words – and those of the illustrious folks he’s worked with – the co-creation of Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Silver Surfer, and so many other super-characters! Presented are numerous rare and unpublished interviews with Stan, discussing how he made Marvel Comics the household name it is today. Also featured are interviews with top luminaries of the comics industry, including John Romita Sr. & Jr., Tod McFarlane, Dennis O’Neil, Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, Al Jaffee, Larry Lieber, Jerry Robinson, and Michael Uslan discussing his vital importance to the field he helped shape. Plus, this book contains the essential-to-every-writer Stan Lee’s Top Ten Tips for Writers! And as a bonus for this special edition, and direct from Stan’s personal archives (housed at the University of Wyoming), you’ll see rare photos, sample scripts and plots, personal correspondences, and other tidbits from the entire span of his career, some unseen for decades!

Frazetta’s White Indian Collection at Vanguard and Dark Horse

July 15, 2010
By

If any of you followed me on Twitter today, you would have seen that there is an issue with the forthcoming Frank Frazetta White Indian collected edition.

Back in March the Frazetta estate entered into an agreement with Vanguard Productions and even launched the Vanguard Frazetta Classics.  Two books have been announced: Vanguard Frazetta Classics Series Volume 1:  The Complete Johnny Comet, and the Vanguard Frazetta Classics Series Volume 2: The Complete White Indian Collection.

That’s all well and good but just days ago Dark Horse released their October solicitations which included thier own The Classic Comics Archives Vol 1: The White Indian.

Very odd indeed. So I wrote J. David Spurlock of Vanguard and this is what he had to say, I just got off the phone with Mike Richardson at Dark Horse. I expect that we will issue a joint press release later but basically, Vanguard will release WHITE INDIAN Vol 1: By Frazetta, and Dark Horse will do WHITE INDIAN ARCHIVES Vol 2 of all all the other White Indian material.

That must have been some phone call.

Spurlock had previously stated that, “(White Indian is) well into production now with more Vanguard volumes to come.”  So it’s no surprise that it’ll will be publishing the first book. But I wonder how this problem even came about. I know that Dark Horse does have some rights to the Frazetta estate (they will be publishing the Thun’da, King of the Congo Archives), but Image also has reprint rights. Perhaps they want a piece of the action, too?

In any event, it will be good to have this material reprinted. I’ll post more information as it comes available.

And thanks to Rich Johnston, Bleeding Cool,  for reminding me about the Frazetta v. Vangurad/Spurlock lawsuit. Very interesting.

UPDATE: David Spurlock sent me the cover art for the Vanguard collection. You can compare it to the discontinued Dark Horse book.

CCL Podcast #278 – Wanted: Comic Book Adaptation of Harry Potter

Collected Comics Library Podcast #278
21,708Kb; 23m 03s

As most of you know, I’m a co-host on the Comic Book Page Podcast with John Mayo. Each month John and I discuss the Top 300 Graphic Novels and Collected Edition Sales Estimates as reported by Diamond Comics Distributors. One thing that has caught my attention over the years has bee the increasing number of comic book adaptations of original prose novels there have been – and how well they sell. This is really nothing new however, Tarzan and Conan novels have been adapted and there was even the great Classic Illustrated Series. More recently Roy Thomas and Marvel brought back that title and even expanded their line of comics with the Best Selling Author series which includes Stephen King’s The Stand. Boom Studios! is also in the mix with Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? the basis for Blade Runner. But there is one contemporary title title that we have yet to see: Harry Potter. As I explain in today’s podcast, now that Marvel is owned by Disney and the final Potter movie is set to be released (Part One this Christmas and Part Two next summer) it would be the perfect time to announce this monumental project at this years Comic Con. Do it now while Potter fever is still hot. At the biggest stage in the world declare to the biggest fanboy audience in the world it and introduce committed team of artists and writers, have J.K. Rowling oversee the entire creative process, make it at least a 100 issues series covering all seven books. It would be one of, if not, the biggest projects to come out of San Diego this year.

What are some of the best comic book adaptations?

Also on the show I catch up with the week’s news including the passing of Harvey Pekar with a book recommendation of Underground Classics The Transformation of Comics into Comix by James Danky and Denis Kitchen ($29.95, Abrams ComicArts), The Harvey Awards, what’s going on with Marvelman and the New Releases of the Week.
