Collected Comics Library Podcast #263
30,165Kb; 32m 04s

We come to the conclusion of Jack Kirby month! This week I focus on one of Jack’s most celebrated creations: Kamandi, The Last Boy On Earth. DC has published two Archive volumes and here at the CCL, I hope they continue on and not only conclude Kirby’s run, but complete the entire series. I also touch upon two other DC Comics series that tie-in to Kamandi: OMAC and The Atomic Knights both of which have their own collected editions (no, I didn’t forget about the now defunct Atomic Knights Showcase Presents book). Lastly, I talk a bit about Jack’s return to Marvel Comics and his Kamandi inspired Devil Dinosaur, which has its own complete Omnibus.

I have more news on my new podcast and blog: DGTL Comics, a question regarding the lack of the Invincible Volume 5 HC (Image Comics) and the Amazon MarketPlace, C2E2, and my thoughts on two different editions of Superman Vs. Muhammad Ali (DC Comics).

All this and the New Releases of the Week.

For over nearly 100 years the only way to read a comic book was in a printed form – that’s all changing now. Advances in technology have made it possible to purchase, read, and consume comics in seconds.

dgtl comics Podcast and Blog is going to be your guide on that journey. I’ll be exploring the comics themselves with news and reviews; how they are distributed; the different reading devises; continuing advances in the medium and so much more. It’s going to be an open community welcoming those who feel as passionate about digital comics as I do.

Official launch date is April 3, 2010, which coincides with the release of Apple’s iPad.

CCL Podcast #262 – Jack Kirby and Joe Simon’s The Sandman HC (DC Comics)

Collected Comics Library Podcast #262
29,868Kb; 31m 45s

We continue our celebration of Jack Kirby here in the month of March, this time with his collaboration with Joe Simon on The Sandman (DC Comics). By the time Jack and Joe took over the character, Wesley Dodds had already made his extensive costume change from the suit, fedora and gas mask to a more super-hero look with yellow and purple tights. Too make things even more a sign of the times he was given a sidekick: Sandy The Golden Boy. There’s no doubt that the magic of Kirby and Simon breathed more life into the characters and helped make them last longer then they would have. But this particular podcast also focuses on the current Editorial Staff at DC Comics and how I think they have ruined any chance for continuing the Golden Age Sandman Archive line. It’s a shame, really because so many great stories look like they will never be collected.

On another front I announce my plans to startup a new podcast! This time it will focus on reprint editions of an additional sort – digital comics. There is one caveat though; this podcast will be exclusive to my Collected Comics Library iTunes App.

I also talk about Dark Horse Archive line (Samson and Buck Rogers) and the MarvelMan collected edition from (where else?) Marvel.

All this and the New Releases of the Week.

It looks like Spring has sprung here in the Metro Detroit area and it couldn’t of come at a better time! Spring is a time of renewal, to feel alive again, to grow and in my case get one hell of a head cold as the chilly days turns into warm days. The slight flu I received over this past weekend gave way to a real nasty cough and moved right on down to my lungs and throat. As I have gotten better the last of the virus has affected my voice – a case of laryngitis I guess. Anyway I sound terrible. I feel fine now, but I want to save you the agony of listening to me sound like Chiklis as The Thing.

In the meantime you can here what I sounded like just before I went south as I had my monthly conversation with John Mayo on his Comic Book Page podcast when John and I went over the January 2010 Sales Figures.
Here are some other great links from this past week.

  • Dark Horse Comics Solicitations For June 2010. Hardcover Archives include: Eerie Volume 5 (reprinting Eerie #23-27), Flash Gordon Comic Book Volume 1 (reprinting seven complete comics originally published from 1947 through 1953), Mighty Samson Volume 1 (reprinting the first seven comic books from the original 1960s Mighty Samson series).
  • Friend of the CCL, Timothy Callahan, Staff Writer CBR, in his latest When Words Collide column takes a look at 15 Upcoming Collections That Matter. Yes – Steve Ditko does matter! And thanks for the mention, Tim!
  • Kevin Melrose, CBR’s Robot 6, reports that Apple’s iBookstore designates Comics & Graphic Novels as top-tier category. On a related note, I plan on getting an iPad not only for me to read digital comics, but also as a second computer/media player for the family. I’ll report back from time to time and let you know how it goes.
  • Heidi MacDonald, The Beat, has the lowdown on the 2010 Doug Wright Award nominees
  • Of the many, many, many blogs I subscribe to via RSS, I really like Comics Bronze Age by Andrew Wahl. Andrew has just released the 2010 Print Edition of Comics Bronze Age. Please support his site by donating $1.00. I did!
  • Rich Johnston has interesting news on a guy selling Zenith Trade Paperbacks. Yes those Zenith Trade Paperbacks!
