X-Men Origins: Wolverine is out this week and in honor of the movie I’m not going to discuss the lead character. Instead, I’m going to switch things up a bit and talk about all the other mutants that appear in the film – namely the guys that make up Team X (Sabretooth, Deadpool, Agent Zero, Wraith, Bolt and Blob) and touching on a few others like Silver Fox and Gambit. Starting with their first appearance in the comics and were you can find them in collected editions, and all the various trade paperbacks of the characters themselves. As expected there are a lot of books to go over and even a surprise or two.

Also on this week’s show I do a mini review of The Essential Nova (the book that I read on vacation) and just when we can expect the next two Spirit Archives (June and August).

All this and the New Releases of the Week.

After a great vacation I’m back in full work mode. In honor of Wolverine, I’ll be going over the collected editions of the members of Team X and other mutants that appear in the movie for this week’s podcast. Until then, less writing and more links:

Collecting the Publishers: American Comics Group

April 24, 2009

If you caught my last podcast, then you knew that I was on vacation celebrating my 10th anniversary for the past week. It was nice to get away from everyday life, but we were in a constant state of,”…wonder how the kids are” and, “…what did we forget to tell grandma”. But of course all turned out OK. I did a little reading on the trip including Queen and Country The Definitive Edition Volume 3 and The Essential Nova (I’ll expand more on these in the next podcast). Both were very good, but I guess I expected a little more from Nova.

But for now let’s get on with the Friday feature:
Today we come to American Comics Group (ACG). Formed in 1943 it was one of the major publishers giving companies like DC and Marvel a run for their money. ACG had numerous titles throughout the years and had top talent, too boot. Their most famous character creation was that of Herbie aka The Fat Fury. ACG ended in 1967, but some of their most famous runs are now being reprinted by Dark Horse:

  • Herbie Archives Volumes 1-3 collects Herbie #1-23
  • Magicman Archives Volume 1 collects Forbidden Worlds #125-141
  • Nemesis Archives Volume 1 collects Adventures into the Unknown #154-#170

In honor of the Scarlet Speedster returning in Flash: Rebirth, I get down to business talking about the history of the Fastest Man Alive and there’s no better way to do it then to talk about the posthumous biography as done by Iris Allen, The Life Story of the Flash.

The graphic novel from 1997, was actually done by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn and is a retrospective from Iris’ point of views from Barry’s childhood up to Crisis On Infinite Earths. To sort it all out, I go chapter by chapter detailing the exact issues that all the events took place in. For anyone just betting into the Flash or who wants to know more about Barry Allen and why he is so important this is a great way to get up to speed on his life both heroic and tragic.

And if you want to know even more about Barry Allen, here are some great resources:

All this and the New Releases of the Week.
