When is comes to classic collected editions restoration plays a huge role. It comes in many different forms, lettering, color (including black and white), formatting maintenance to the panel and boarders and a keen eye and memory to reconstruct the comics books if any slicing occurred. Today we have a few examples along with some other relevant links:

Collecting the Publishers: Aardvark-Vanaheim

I stated on the podcast a few weeks back that I received the excellent Slings and Arrows Comic Guide 2nd Edition as a gift. Unlike the Overstreet Guide it does not list comic books by monetary value, but does provide reviews of the entire run and it also tells the reader if a certain run has been published in collected edition form – something that is rather handy as it pertains to this blog. Now then, I wanted to add a little something extra to the CCL and to give out some interesting information that you may not otherwise find at other websites. That’s why, starting today, and continuing on a weekly basis, I’m going to take a publisher (big or small) and list some of their comics books that are available as a collected edition. It won’t be a Top 10 list per se, nor will I (or can I) list everything from, say Marvel, but I’ll give out recommendations. Please feel free to comment and send me suggestions you may have.

I’m going to do my best to do this in alphabetical order, so let’s start with: Aardvark-Vanaheim, which is best know for publishing Dave Sim’s Cerebus.

  • Cerebus has been collected into 16 editions covering all 300 issues.
  • There’s also the Dave Sim’s Collected Letters Volume 1 (January-May 2004) and Volume 2 (June-July.2004).
  • Flaming Carrot Comics is a surrealist comic book by Bob Burden. In February 2009, Bob Burden Studios released the Flaming Carrot Collected Edition Volume 1 HC. This book collects the out-of-print Flaming Carrot comics that were originally published by Dark Horse. I do not know if the early Flaming Carrot has ever been collected.
  • Journey: The Adventures of Wolverine MacAlistaire was an independent comic book created by William Messner-Loebs about Michigan frontier life in the 19th century. In 2008, IDW published a trade paperback collecting the first 16 issues.
  • Ms. Tree a creation of author Max Allan Collins has moved around from publisher to publisher including Renegade and DC Comics. The 3 issue run by Aardvark-Vanaheim (“Runaway” 1985, Ms. Tree #16-17; “Muerta Means Death” Part 1 1985, Ms. Tree #18) has been collected in Ms. Tree (1988, small paperback collection, it reprints Ms. Tree #16-23).
  • normalman is a limited series created by Jim Valentino. The recent Collected normalman TPB published by Image Comics collects every single normalman appearance.
  • The Puma Blues written by Stephen Murphy and drawn by Michael Zulli. Mirage Studios has collected the first two story arcs (Issues #1-12 – Book One: Watch That Man and Issues #13-19 – Book Two: Sense of Doubt) into trade paperbacks.

CCL Survey Comments and Answers

Regular readers of this blog know that I have simple survey pop up from time to time. For those of you who have taken a minute out of your day to fill out the survey, I thank you very much, for those of you who have not, please do so, it helps me out immensely. Today, I took a look at the comments and decided to share with you some of the responses from people who had trouble with the site and comment back.

Needed to find out why Tales To Astonish #13 was included in Annihilation Classic HC, no answer was given.

The Annihilation Classic HC features the first appearances and memorable stories showcasing members of the Annihilation Conquest event and the current Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series. Groot, who first appeared in Tales To Astonish #13, is a member of that team.

I’m looking for a complete chronological listing of all Superman TPB’s since 1986. I’m not sure where on the net to get this information because there are so many.

To me this is a vague question. Do you mean a complete chronological listing of all Superman comic books that have been collected in Trade Paperback form? What about the Hardcovers? What about Superman books that has been published since 1986, but reprint comic books from before 1986, such as Archives, Showcase Presents and Chronicles? What about crossovers like Our Worlds At War? What about the Superman/Batman comic run? In any event the best possible place would be Rob Helmerich’s Trade Paperback List: Superman section.

I wanted to download some EC Comic’s and I was looking to be able to read some of the rarer and harder to find comics in their entirety.

Sorry, this is not a BitTorrent site nor do I have pre-scanned comics available to download.

There used to be pdf’s of the checklists for easy downloading, not just xls files.

I did get several requests to change the format of the checklists. Many people do not have PDF editors, so to compensate I changed the format to that of a spreadsheet.

Today on the show, we get back to basics showcasing an iconic super-hero, an iconic super-villain and an iconic storyline: Spider-Man: Kraven’s Last Hunt. This is such a seminal mini-series that Marvel bestowed upon it the first volume in the Premiere Classic line of books. Published in 1987, the horrifying tale and ultra violent ending still has repercussions in today’s Marvel universe. No one is spared in this Clockwork Orange insanity driven saga; from Kraven himself injecting himself into the role of Spider-Man to better understand his prey, to Peter Parker being buried alive and reevaluating what it means to be a hero and even to Mary Jane who struggles for days when Peter vanishes without a trace. It’s no wonder that Marvel chose this title as the lead off, cementing it forever as a true Classic.

Also on the show are some news items regarding some upcoming oversized books including Absolute Justice, Absolute Green Lantern: Rebirth, Astonishing X-Men Omnibus, The Golden Age Marvel Comics Omnibus and the Iron Fist Omnibus.

All this and the New Releases of the Week.
