Something to ponder

February 26, 2009

The next time you find yourself at a big box bookstore ask yourself: why so much Manga and so few comic book collected editions?

Sure Manga is hot, but with the advent of blockbuster movies like Dark Knight Iron Man and even Watchmen, why isn’t there more Comic Books on the shelves?

Four years. Every week for four years, I’ve been producing this podcast. I say it annually that I never thought I would last this long, but here I am and here it is. And I really owe it all to you the reader of this blog and listener of the podcast. I can’t thank you enough.

As usual, for special shows, I focus on big books, events or characters and today is no different. Many of you have been collecting The Absolute Sandman volumes and just as many of you will probably be buying The Absolute Death when it is published in October. I’d like to recommend another book to add to your collection and that is Sandman: Kind Of Dreams by Alisa Kwitney. Published in 2003, it’s an in-depth retrospective of the series including artwork, op-ed pieces and even an Introduction by Neil Gaiman, himself.

Also on the show, I go over a new section to the CCL site: Marvel Premiere Classic, you can find it on the Library Page. All this and the New Releases of the Week.

Look, I know that mistakes are made all the time. I certainly have had my share of spelling and grammar errors. But you would think that a big company like DC Comics would add in a little proofreading when it comes to laying out the contents of their collected editions in their monthly solicitation rundown. Take for example:

SUPERMAN: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW? DELUXE EDITION HC
Written by Alan Moore
Art by Dave Gibbons, Curt Swan & George Perez, Kurt Schaffenberger, Murphy Anderson and Rick Veitch & Al Williamson
Cover by Brian Bolland
Legendary writer Alan Moore’s seminal Superman issues are collected in this Deluxe Edition hardcover featuring beautiful art from Dave Gibbons (WATCHMEN), Curt Swan (ACTION COMICS) and Rick Veitch (SWAMP THING)! Collects the two-part “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” from SUPERMAN #423 and ACTION COMICS #583 as Superman faces his greatest foes and his final battle! Also featuring the classic story “For the Man who has Everything” from ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #11 where Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman fight the evil warlord Mongul for the fate of The Man of Steel. And in DC COMICS PRESENTS #85, Superman meets Swamp Thing, a character fans have identified with Moore for over 20 years!
Advance-solicited; on sale July 8 • 7 1/16″ x 10 7/8″, 128 pg, FC, $24.99 US

Did you catch it? The “classic story For the Man who has Everything” is not from ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #11, it’s actually from SUPERMAN ANNUAL #11. OK I may be nitpicking, but I do so because I care. Oh and if DC is reading this, I’m available at a cheap rate. Now on to a few links:

Chris Marshall and Ric Croxton talk about the world of collected comics (episode #10). Chris informs us with some great information on different books, while Ric rambles on.

Next Bruce Rosenberger, KomicsKast, shares his first of I hope many to come segment on Old Time Radio shows. Thanks Bruce, I now have another great radio show to listen to during those long boring hours at work.

Email Ric at ric.croxton@gmail.com with any questions or comment you have on the episode or post on the The Book Cave Forum. This podcast episode originated on the The Book Cave website.

CCL Podcast #208 – Trading The Invaders

Today on the show, I focus on one of the “super-groups” of the Marvel universe – The Invaders. What’s interesting about this team, consisting of Captain America, Namor: The Sub-Mariner, The Human Torch and Bucky, is that it was created retroactively in 1975, with all their adventures taking place in World War II. Their series lasted 41 issues and they appeared in only a few other titles throughout the years which included two limited series that revived the team. Today in 2009, The Invaders can be found in two series: Avengers/Invaders and in the pages of Captain America. These important characters, whether they are adventuring as individuals or as a team, are the cornerstones of the Marvel Universe, come learn more about them.

Also on the show, I touch a few news items including the Nexus Archives going black and white and digest size and the Creepy Archives going to 26 volumes.

All this and the New Releases of the Week.

Chris

Addendum: I did record audio to talk about Invaders Classic Volume 2 (Invaders #10-21 and Annual #1) and Invaders Classic Volume 3 (Invaders #22-23 and #25-34), but the audio did not come through as I had hoped.
