Today’s show is all about expanding your horizons. If you’re like me, then you grew up in a world full of capes, flying men and heroes with no real parents. But thanks to companies like Dark Horse we get to step away from all the super-powered action adventures and step into a world of suspense, mayhem and other worldly tales. Thus on tap for today is the Creepy Archives Volume 1. First published by Warren in the late 1960’s, Creepy (and Eerie) Magazine was the answer to the defunct EC line of horror comics. Nearly picking up where EC left off, Warren hired many of the same artists and writers, including Alex Toth, Archie Goodwin and Joe Orlando. So a bit of history is in order as we explore these classic stories.

Also on the show, I give a rundown of summer Showcase Presents and Library Editions from DC and a great email regarding the upcoming Captain Britain Omnibus from Marvel.

Time to get caught up on several Collected Edition news items from around the web.

ICv2 Announces Graphic Novel Industry Summit at New York Comic Con. Full schedule included.

IDW changes size with Dick Tracy Volume 7. I blogged (or mentioned it in the podcast) about this some weeks back. Still no word on if IDW with go back and reprint the first six volumes in this oversized format.

Archie will be publishing a new trade paperback of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume One: Heroes In A Half Shell a 3-issue mini-series that adapted the first 5 episodes of the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series. Due out May 6th, 2009, it will be a part of the 25th Anniversary of the Turtles. On Sale at Comic Specialty Shops: May 13th, 2009, $11.95 by Michael Dooney.

Mike Baehr, Fantagraphics, asks the question: What never-reprinted Fantagraphics series would you most like to see collected? Respond back at their blog.

Speaking of Fantagraphics (and TMNT), they are going to publish Usagi Yojimbo: The Special Edition as part of it’s 25th Anniversary. It will debut at Comic-Con this summer as a complete, definitive two-volume slipcased hardcover Special Edition. It will also have extra material, some from the long-out-of-print hardcover editions and some brand new: a complete full-color gallery of the more than 50 Usagi covers from that period (never-before-collected); many preparatory sketches; two “non-canon” Usagi stories by Stan Sakai co-starring the TMNT (with whom Usagi also shared screen time in the TMNTs’ TV series); and a long career-spanning interview with Sakai. Fantagraphics calling is their biggest Special Edition re-issue yet. $95.00, 1200 pages.

A.C. Nielsen’s BookScan service has provided ICv2 with a ranking of the top 20 graphic novels of 2008. Guess what #1 was.

John Seavey, Fraggmented, makes a list of what Showcase Presents he would like to see. I think Warlord and Firestorm are safe bets.

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release the Watchmen Motion Comic on Blu-ray and DVD on March 3rd, three days before the premiere of the film. And for more on this check out Wordballoon Host John Siuntres talks with Watchman Animator Jake Hughes.

Bob Greenberger talks about his next project The Batman Vault, which is similar to the Marvel Comics and DC Comics Vault books. It’s due out by Christmas 2009.

Vertigo Comics takes center stage on this installment of the CCL. First there is an actual solicit of the Absolute Prometha. It is slated for September 30 and will collect Promethea #1-12, (328 pgs, $99.99). Then, for the feature, I take a look at the two upcoming Swamp Thing Hardcovers: Roots of the Swamp Thing and Alan Moore’s Saga of the Swamp Thing Book 1. Not only do I cover the contents and basic information, but also what is conspicuously not collected, such as the pre-Moore work on Saga from Marty Pasko. And I ask the questions: Will that run ever get collected and, more importantly, should it ever get collected.

Also on the show this week, there’s information on The Spirit Archives Volume 26, Superman: Kryptonite Nevermore, The Wolverine Omnibus HC and the Alias Ultimate Collection 1 TP, collecting issues #1-15 (360 pgs, $34.99, May 20).

Secret Wars from Marvel (1984-85) was one of the series that got me hooked on comics. it was massive in every sense of the word. It was 12 issue event full of super-heroes and super-villains, cliffhangers and wonder, a cosmic being that could destroy everything with the snap of a finger and, of course, costume changes. It also had lasting impact not only in the comic book industry, but with fanboys worldwide. It was something special and today we celebrate Secret Wars with a look at the newly released Omnibus. We also take a look at the upcoming Secret Wars II Omnibus, the Beyond! Premiere Hardcover and what isn’t and, more importantly, what couldn’t be collected for these great books.

Also on the show, a quick look at the 2008 Top 10 Graphic Novels and Trade Paperbacks (Collected Editions), Marvel Premiere Classics corrections and a question: How should Marvel collect the 5-page Spider-Man/Barack Obama back-up from Amazing Spider-Man #583?
