CCL Podcast #139 - Daredevil: The Devil Inside and Out Vol. 2

Collected Comics Library Podcast #139
20,005Kb; 21m 04s

This weeks’ show is sort of a follow up to Show #115, when I reviewed Daredevil: The Devil Inside and Out Vol. 1. Volume 2 starts off with Matt Murdock’s search for the culprit in Europe and has some very nice elements to it. I’m really beginning to like Ed Brubaker, in fact he may just be my favorite writer at the moment.
Not too much else to go over this week. Except for the Nick Fury delay, which I vehemently blogged about on Tuesday, the news is pretty slow. I do go over the New Releases of the Week and add in a new Halloween related Question of the Month for October.
Lastly, don’t try to call me on the voice mail. I decided to turn it off. It just wasn’t getting a whole lot of use, and frankly I don’t blame you. It’s too expensive to call, so from now on come by the Forum or shoot me an e-mail.

Comic Book Blog browsing on a Tuesday afternoon

Just catching up on a few links that I inadvertently passed over:

  • Marvel by way their Marvel Masterworks site have announced that Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD Vol. 1 has been delayed for 3-4 weeks (mostly likely due to a printing error). Have I mentioned recently how pissed I am with all the delays and errors that are occurring in collected editions lately? This is now coming across as an epidemic, by not just Marvel, but all companies. The people responsible should be held accountable to the fullest extent. If that means termination then so be it. Solicitations come out three months in advance and with a specific release date. Assurances must be met and quality standards must be in place to get these books out in accordance to the original given solicit date. If proper printing guidelines were followed and contingency and risk management systems were in place, the book could be published on time. Therefore, there would be no issues to deal with. This news was first posted on September 23 and since then no official press release or explanation has come forth on Marvel.com or news portals like Newsarama and Comic Book Resources. If the date cannot be met, then don’t try to sweep it under the rug on a single web page with some half-assed excuse and hope that it will go unnoticed. That is completely inexcusable especially for a high priced ticket item. I, and the readers of this blog and listeners of the podcast are aware of these practices and are fed up. Somewhere in the world Steranko is laughing.
  • The first The Hellboy Library Editions (handsomely bound to match The Art of Hellboy) has a tenitive release date of April, 2008 (let’s all hold our breath). It will collect Seed of Destruction and Wake The Devil. No price is given at this time, stay tuned. This information came to me by way of the Dark Horse e-mail newsletter Pony Express which you can sign up for.
  • Titan Books has acquired worldwide rights to produce a making-of book for the Frank Miller Spirit film.
  • Fantagraphics will release Palestine: The Special Edition, a 320-page 8″ x 11″ hardcover, on January 8th for $29.95.
  • TwoMorrows is offering select editions of Alter Ego, Back Issue, Draw!, Rough Stuff, Write Now, and Jack Kirby Collector in digital form.
  • Harper to Reprint Scott McCloud’s Zot!

It’s not often that I comment on the weather, because time is all relative in the Internet universe. But, WOW, was it just fantastic!. No clouds what-so-ever and a nice 77 degrees with a slight breeze all weekend. Nigh time was calm and cool. It was nice to sit on the deck and drink down a gin and tonic, my libation of choice for the summertime. It may be until next year when I crack open a new bottle of Tanqueray. Good bye Michigan summer, on to today’s links:

CCL Podcast #138 - When Trades Collide! Greatest Flash X 2

Filed under: Podcast, alex ross, barry allen, flash, jay garick - 19 Sep 2007

Collected Comics Library Podcast #138
38,644Kb; 40m 57s

It’s the second edition of “When trades Collide!” here on the CCL. This time I compare The Greatest Flash Stories Ever Told (1991) and The Flash: The Greatest Stories Ever Told (2007), including contents, the similarities, the differences, and which book is better.
Secondly, I put to rest (for the time being) the total confusion that we have been having over the scheduling changes to some of your favorite Collected Editions.
Comic Book Binding was the subject over at Comic Geek Speak episode 290 and I dive into that a little bit. Also, David Peterson (Mouse Guard) is signing at Detroit Comics this week and I will be in attendance, come on by and say hello and buy a trade or two.
Congratulations go out to Aaron from Barlett, TN, who correctly guessed that, Marvel Masterworks: X-Men Volume 4 is missing from my collection. He will be getting a copy of Showcase Presents Green Lantern Volume 1.

In this special “Behind the Numbers” episode of the Mayo Report, I join John on his Comic Book Page show to discuss why we think it is worth analyzing and discussing the sales estimates each month. We also discuss why we don’t have all-inclusive information and why we are unable to report on how items sell outside of the Diamond sales channel. Download the MP3.

I had a very nice weekend, here in the Mid-West. It was my wife’s birthday and we had a wonderful day filled with food and family. The kids also had their soccer games and the weather couldn’t have been nicer. It was also good that the Wolverines, Spartans, Lions and Tigers (who swept the Twins) all won!
As for me? I had a chance to read Outsiders #50. I think I’m going to like this series. I wasn’t really looking to add anything to my pull list, but this one may well be worth it. I also had a chance to catch up on Burn Notice and watch an advance screening of The Sarah Conner Chronicles, which looks promising. Odd that it has nothing to do with Terminator 3. In fact, it discounts that movie completely, by becoming “the true sequel” to T2. I plan on watching the new Bionic Woman, later on today.
Now on to today’s links:

  • ICv2 continues its series of interviews with comic publishers with a talk with Marvel publisher David Buckley (who asked VP Sales David Gabriel) to join in. In Part 1 (of four, to be published over two days), ICv2 talks about the state of the market and the reasons for the success of Civil War in bookstores as well as comic stores.
  • In Part 2 ICv2 talks about more of the newer distribution channels for Marvel books, and Marvel’s publishing plans to tie into its 2008 movies: Gabriel also drops that Marvel will be publishing The Hulk: The End Premiere HC to coincides with the release of the new movie.
  • In Part 3, ICv2 talks about publishing Amazing Spider-Man three times a month, lessons learned from Anita Blake and Dark Tower, and where graphic novels should be racked in bookstores.
  • In Part 4, ICv2 discuss Marvel’s classics line, lessons from the death of Captain America event, Webcomics, and more.

Platinum Studios for a penny

I have to admit, I didn’t know anything about Platinum Studios, until their announcement to go public. In the article, posted on ICv2.com, Platinum may be traded as a penny stock. Now, if you’re more of a connoisseur of Birds of Prey then you are The Wall Street Journal, then you probably don’t care one way or another. But, you should know that a penny stock is defined as “common stocks that trade for less than $5 a share”. Platinum may be traded as low as .10¢.
Penny stocks are also very risky to invest in. Most notably it’s easy to get in at a low price and make a lot of quick money up to hundreds and even thousands of dollars in a short amount of time. Conversely, you can lose just as fast, due to the fact that there may not be any buyers for that stock when you go to sell. Before you go online and buy up a bunch of shares with your gas money, check with a professional stock broker or financial adviser that you trust.
My financial adviser, who is one of my best friends that I’ve know since grade school and we even stood up in each others weddings, always told me to stay away from penny stock, no matter how good it looks. In the short term it looks good and may seem to be a “can’t lose situation”, in the long term, however, you’ll get burned if you don’t manage your portfolio properly.
To get more of a professional option, I passed along the article and all the pertinent information to my friend and this is what he had to say, “…the majority of penny stocks lose money. Every once in a while you may hit a home run, however, the majority of times people strike out”.

Caveat emptor,
Chris

CCL Podcast #137 - Wolverine Collected Editions

Collected Comics Library Podcast #137
34,715Kb; 36m 45s

As you can tell by my Blog postings, there is a lot of news to cover, most of it from Baltimore, but not all. I only go over the most important stories because I have to save enough time to go over the topic at hand - Wolverine.
Yes, after over two years of podcasting I finally get to cover everyones favorite mutant. There is a lot to choose from, but surprisingly not when it comes to his solo material pre-1988. So I ask the question, with the Wolverine movie coming in 2009, what will Marvel do as far as a Masterwork or Omnibus type edition? Sit back and enjoy, because I’ll tell you.

Marvel Amazon finds

It’s been a while since I went hunting on Amazon.com for new books coming out (from Marvel. Keep in mind that Amazon is notorious for odd release dates. Here are just a few of them, thanks to the posters on the CCL Forum:

     Collects Amazing Spider-Man #544-545, Sensational Spider-Man #40, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #23
X-Men: The Complete Onslaught Epic, Book 1 TPB

     Collects X-Men #53-54, Uncanny X-Men #334-335, Avengers #400-401, Onslaught: X-Men, X-Man #18, X-Force #57, Cable #34 and Incredible Hulk #444

Marvels (Marvel Premiere Classic) HC
     Collects Marvels #0-4, Ruins #1-2

Amazon also lists Elektra By Frank Miller Omnibus HC. It has a release date of this week and does not list any contents. This is, to say the least, an odd listing. It could, however, collect Elektra: Assassin #1-8, Elektra Lives Again just to name a few. More info on this title as it warrents.
