CCL Podcast #110 - Two Year Anniversary and The JSA

Collected Comics Library Podcast #110
25,606Kb; 27m 18s

It’s the CCL Two Year Anniversary Show! First up, I want to thank everyone for supporting my podcast for the past two years; I could never have done it without your support. I also want to thank my sponsors In Stock Trades and Forbidden Planet International - the best online companies on both sides to the Atlantic.
This week we have a lot of news to cover including MAD, Jack Kirby, Mutt and Jeff, Tellos, Revere, Mouse Guard, The Planet Hulk Omnibus, and even more from last week’s New York Comic Con.
As per usual, I go over the New Releases of the Week and there is even a new Question of the Month. This month I’m asking what you would like to ask the editors at the various comic book companies. I plan on compiling them all at the end of March and sending them in. As much as I’d like to get a response, I’m really looking to let the editor know that there is more to comics then just the Monthly titles. There is a whole slue of us that are hardcore collectors of the Trade Paperbacks and Hardcovers.
For the feature this week I go over my favorite superhero team of all time The Justice Society of America. However, this is not about their run that is collected in the All-Star Archives. This biography of the team starts with their Silver Age appearances with the Justice League of America all the way up to the brand new run by Geoff Johns. There are many trades to go over and more importantly some issues that have yet to be collected. Want to to know what they are? Click on the link and give a listen.

Trade news from the NYCC

Sifting through al the news bits from the New York Comic-Con this past weekend, I have found the following nuggets:

DC Comics

  • There will be more Absolute Editions containing Wildstorm material coming soon. As with other Absolute Editions, the colors will be retouched and cleaned up.
  • There will be a new Manhunter trade paperback.
  • There will be four trades of “52“.that will just feature the main lead stories, but not the backups. DC will collect those somehow in the future.
  • No collected edition of All-Star Squadron is planned but did not rule it out in the future.

Marvel

  • Orson Scott Card will write a new, exclusive Ender’s Game story that will only appear in the Red Prophet hardcover collection which collects the first six issues in July. The story will be called “The Gold Bug”
  • Marvel will be collecting the covers drawn by artists for the Hero Initiative Ultimate 100 - 100 covers of Ultimate Spider-Man #100 drawn by various artists which are being auctioned off to generate funds for Heroes Initiative. The collected volume will, according to a Marvel source speaking to Newsarama, include all the covers except the cover drawn by Todd McFarlane. The release date for the collected edition will be announced soon, and will be distributed through the Hero Initiative.

Dark Horse

  • There will another edition of Star Wars: Panel to Panel, coming in May. This second volume will focus on the characters of the Extended Universe and characters Dark Horse has added to the Star Wars mythos.
  • The Hellboy Companion, will be text, with illustrations from Mignola, including old art and a dozen new pieces. The Hellboy stories will be explored in an essay format, and there will be some literary analysis and an explanation of where Hellboy fits into literary traditions.
  • The Buffy Omnibus will run approximately seven volumes and is modeled after the Star Wars Omnibus volumes. Allie said that everyone at Dark Horse really enjoyed the fatter collections being done at other companies, but they wanted “really good design, god production, on good paper” for their stories. The Buffy Omnibuses will collect all of the non-Whedon Buffy comics in chronological order, beginning this summer. The second volume will be released next winter.

Jack Kirby’s Pacific Comics work to be collected

This week over at Comic Book Resources, Erik Larsen mentioned in his One Fan’s Opinion column that a couple of new Jack Kirby trades are being published form Image Comics. The two books are going to collect his Pacific Comics work:
Silver Star and Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers.
These books are projected to collect the following:

Jack Kirby’s Silver Star
Collects Silver Star #1-6 (1983; Pacific Comics) and Jack Kirby’s Silver Star #1 (1993; Topps Comics)
Jack Kirby’s Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers
Collects Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers #1-13 (1981) and Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers Special (1983) from Pacific Comics

I’ve sent and e-mail to Image trying to get more information and release dates. I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Books on the way…

Here’s a few tidbits that you guys should know about.

Panini Comics in the UK has uploaded their 2007 Collected Editions Release Schedule. Keep in mind that all prices are listed in £’s. Could we really be getting a Planet Hulk Omnibus?!? Let’s hope so! Also, buyers and browsers beware of the books on this list. For right now treat it as speculation. Nothing is official until Marvel says so.

Arcana Studio Press aka ASP has released their
2007 Release Schedule, too. And in case you’re wondering Revere: Revolution in Silver HC, is on the schedule for July!

The Tellos Over-sized Hardcover is shipping in May from Image Comics and Mike Weiringo. It will collect the original 10 issue run, as well as the two 10-page stories from the Prologue and Prelude specials and the 5-page story that appeared in the back of Section Zero #1 from the old Gorilla Comics line. The remaining pages will be made up of sketch material that Mike Weiringo accumulated over the years. For more information visit Mike’s official site and scroll down to entry 341.

Heidi MacDonald blogs on The Beat that NBM Publishing and Graphic Novels will start a reprint series called Forever Nuts, spotlighting the oddball early years of the American comic strip. Up first, just in time for its 100th birthday, Bud Fisher’s Mutt and Jeff.

I want to let all of you know that just because I’m not going to the New York Comic-Con this weekend doesn’t mean I won’t be reporting anything. I’ll be reading the news blogs and posting links here at the CCL and giving my opinions and updating the Release Schedule accordingly. If you are going to New York, have a safe and happy trip - and be sure to buy a trade or two.

CCL Podcast #109 - The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide

Collected Comics Library Podcast #109
31,958Kb; 34m 05s

Show #109 starts out with a bang - I’m not going to the NYCC this
weekend, I know a big surprise, eh? Well perhaps I’ll see you in Detroit. Then again perhaps not.
To start, I do have to go back and recap The Boys rant that I did last week. Thanks to Mike and Harvey for helping — and hurting me.
Also, thanks to Mario for his voice mail. I never knew he had such interest in Wonder Woman. I now know why. Chuckle, chuckle
For this week’s feature I dissect The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. Man what a big book, but as Frodo told Samwise, “There’s room for a little more”.
Good times for one and all.

Where is Wonder Woman?

The Who Is Wonder Woman? HC written by Allan Heinberg is on indefinite hold.
This series has been plagued by delays since the start and now #5 will not get complete on time - or ever. This of course backs up the publishing of the hardcover which was to collect the first five issues.
I’m not sure what the problem stems from, but I’m willing to bet that old W.W. Marston is spinning in his grave. Here is the Official Press Release.

Also, I did some digging and I found an interview Heinberg did with Comic Book Resources last June. Here are some highlights, with my comments:

CBR: “Infinite Crisis” pretty much hit the reset button for Wonder Woman. Her gods, her friends, her world-all gone. Will the past figure prominently into the relaunch, or are you starting over from square one?

AH: We are respectfully building on the character’s, and the book’s, long, distinguished history, but if you’ve never read “Wonder Woman” before, issue #1 is absolutely the beginning of the story and an ideal jumping-on point.

Now it seems #4 is an ideal jumping-off point.

CBR: How long are you going to be writing the book?

AH: At this point, we’re only talking about the first five, but if my schedule permits, I’d love to write more.

Not bloody likely now.
