CCL Podcast #106 - THE Captain Marvel

Collected Comics Library Podcast #106
29,584Kb; 42m 04s

This is the first part of a two-part episode on Captain Marvel. Today’s show will focus on the first incarnation of the character, from Fawcett Comics and DC Comics, now known as Shazam! Next week I’ll go over Captain Marvel aka Mar-Vell, from Marvel Comics.
And speaking of the former Kree officer, I give my opinion on his return to the Marvel Universe in Civil War.
There’s a new Question of the Month: Would you like to have a digital copy (pdf) of the comic included with the trade?
I also get a nice call from Aziz, and I talk about The Boys from Wildstorm and the lack of a trade. Bummer.

My wife works in the telecom industry. For years now we have been worried about all the mergers and the subsequent layoffs. Luckily, she has kept her job through the years. We’ve also been amazed that one giant company was broken up to become many small companies. Now they have all merged back into one big company again. Colbert explains:

Trade Secrets 7

This is my monthly talk with Comic Geek Speak contributor John Mayo.

Tonight, John and will be going over the Trade stats for books that came out in November 2006 as well as the Market Share. As an added bonus, we also talk about the monthly Civil War books and how we think the delays will impact the release dates of the Trades and their overall sales performance.
This show was originally uploaded, by Executive Producer Bryan Deemer, on the Comics Geek Speak RSS feed on January 12, 2007.

EC Archives Scheduling Update

I’ve received word from J.C. Vaughn (Executive Editor at Gemstone Publishing) by way of Joe, from Forbidden Planet International, that Tales from the Crypt is due to reach Diamond in LA next week, which should mean it should hit retailers January 31 or February 7.
Two-Fisted Tales will arrive at the same time, but they don’t want to hurt the retailers or the consumers by shipping them the same week, so that will get released February 28.
Weird Science Volume 2 should follow, and after that, all should be back on schedule.

Adding Video Clips - Jac Mac and Rad Boy: Go!

So I’m going to add some fun to the Blog. It seems that everyone these days are adding various video clips from YouTube, Google and other sites, so I might as well jump on the bandwagon. I’m not sure how often I’ll be doing this and there is a chance that you have seen these videos on other Blogs.
Keep in mind that videos may be taken down, so please e-mail me if you come across a video that isn’t working.

Today’s clip is called “Jac Mac and Rad Boy: Go!”. I first saw it at an animation festival back in the 1980’s. I can still remember it on the big screen and besides laughing my but off (the immature twerp that I was) I was amazed at the artwork. Come to find out, it was done completely in colored pencil by a guy named Wesley Archer in 1985.

It looks like some what of a precursor to Bevis and Butt-Head and that’s by no mistake. Mike Judge said he was heavily influenced by this piece. Archer has gone on to do other animation, most notably The Simpson’s, Futruama and King of the Hill with Judge, himself.

As I look back on it, the artwork still holds up today and it does contain ultra-violent images, but Mac and Rad get their due in the end.

Quick show for you today. Not much in the way of news, although CrossGen and Checker Book have announced an exciting team-up.
I go over a very light New Releases Schedule, it seems that most everything was brought out for Christmas and now it’s time for the January leftovers. No EC Archives - Tales From The Crypt Volume One and on another sad note, no Storm Premiere Hardcover this week, I know that so many of you we’re looking forward to it.
No review or real feature but I bet you’re curious as to why I have a picture of Thor up for the art this week. Come on in and see what that is all about.

Supernova, Starman VIII and David Knight

With the release of my last show on Starman, it really got me thinking just who the new Starman of the JSA is. In doing my research it also led me to figure out just who Supernova is in 52. I believe my speculation to be right and accurate. Time will tell – no more then 18 weeks.

Supernova is David Knight, son of the original Starman, Ted Knight and brother of Jack Knight, Starman VII.
He is also the new Starman.

The clues are there.

If you know your Starman history you know that David always wanted to be a Superhero. He took up the mantle of Starman in issue #0 and was almost instantly assassinated. He was thrown back in time and took up the mantle of Starman of 1951. A persona that was originally Batman’s from Detective Comics #247 (hence the Batman angle), but was retconned in the Robinson series. Now it appears that he has taken up a costume that Superman once wore in the Silver Age (World’s Finest #178).

Ralph does know David well because both have lived in Opal City. Also Ralph, having been among the Starmen, knows what the Starmen powers are.

Supernova’s, themselves, happen in outerspace, hence “star”.

Supernova’s costume insignia is the same as that of Metropolis’s fictional TV station Galaxy Broadcasting System. Again, “star”.

Now while I’m at it. The new Starman in the JSA is not Thom Kallor/Danny Blaine/Star Boy. In the last issue of Starman #80, Thom said that one more person would become Starman before he would take over the role. Also in that issue Jack said he had picked who it would be. Although David did get his shot at being a “Starman” it didn’t last. David has now come back to become a hero - again. We also know that Jack has yet to make an appearance in 52. Waid said Jack would make an appearance, and no I’m not talking about that very brief image of him talking to Courtney in one of the early issues.

I think Jack is going to find out about Supernova/David and confront him about being the new Starman in the JSA. David not sure of his exact role and is thoroughly confused and that’s why he is in the mental institution. David’s been killed, reincarnated in 1951, a ghost and now somehow reincarnated again (probably by the ramifications of Infinite Crisis). Hell, if this happened to me I’d be seeing a shrink, too.

At one point I thought Supernova was Hawkman or even Black Condor. I never thought it was Conner.
