Thanksgiving came and went without a hitch. I ended up going down to the traditional Detroit Lions vs. insert team here Game for the first time in my life. It’s hard to believe that such die-hard sports fan that I am, I have never been to the game before. As it turns out the game sucked and my brother-in-law and I went home after halftime. Patty and I served dinner for 22 people at 5:00pm. Late for most families around the country, but for some reason, here in Detroit, no one eats until the Lions game is over.
Friday fairly eventful. The weather turned out to be a balmy 50 degrees, so I grabbed the golf clubs and played nine at the Country Club where I work. I certainly was not alone, the course was rather full, but I had no problem getting around or shooting a 39.
Saturday I went out with some friends and watched the USC/Notre Dame game. Now, other then beer or an ice cold T and T, I’m not much of a drinker, but I had a pretty good shot that consisted of Red Bull and Raspberry Stoli Vodka. I tasted a helluva lot better then it looked.
As for today, not much of anything. I read the entire Sunday paper and raked a few leaves. The kids have to go to bed at 8 because all weekend long they’ve stayed up until about 10pm. I imagine it will be torture for them Monday morning.
I’d be remised if I didn’t mention the passing of two comic legends this holiday weekend, Dave Cockrum and Jerry Bails.
I’ve never met Mr. Cockrum, of course, but I’ve always enjoyed his work particularly on X-Men. I think as a tribute to him I’ll re-read his run in my X-Men Masterworks this week.
Jerry Bails is another story. A few years ago I found out that Mr. Bails lived in the Detroit area (east side to be exact). Funny thing was, he only lived a few blocks away from my In-Laws. There had also been a few times where I had to drive by his home running various errands, too. I wrote Mr. Bails a few times regarding the DC Archive Editions. He was kind enough to write back and answer my questions and give his opinions on matters. It was sort of my Mount Olympus of sorts. Here I was, a nobody, conversing with one of the Comic Books Gods. OK, that may be a stretch, but that’s how I’ll remember him. I’m deeply saddened that I never got to meet him face to face even though we live so close to each other. It will go down as one of the few regrets that I have in life.
Talk to you on Wednesday. Peanuts, anyone?
